Five members of a family were grievously injured when the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in went out of control, and jumped over the highway barrier, before crashing into a field in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district on Thursday morning

The incident took place on Sant Road near the Bhathwada Toll Plaza and Godhra. The injured, all residents of Vadodara, were rushed to SSG Hospital for treatment.

Police said the injured, identified as Nidhi Shah, Sangeeta Shah, Amisha Shah, Kokila Shah and Karan Shah, had been on their way to Madhya Pradesh to attend a wedding.

“The driver appears to have lost control of the car, causing it to jump and flip over the highway barrier before crashing into the field. All five occupants of the car were thrown out and have suffered grievous injuries,” a police official said.

The accident even caused the vehicle to dislodge the cement block holding the highway’s W-beam barrier in place. Residents rushed to help the injured, even as the 108 ambulance service ferried them first to Godhra Civil Hospital, from where they were referred to SSG Hospital in Vadodara for further treatment.

The Panchmahal district police have initiated a probe into the case.
