Teachers protest for salaries
PANCHKULA: Laboratory assistants and computer teachers posted in government schools in Haryana took to the main road near the Housing board for a protest on Tuesday,demanding that their salaries be released as they have been held for several months. The employees also seek an increase in their pay to Rs 15,000 per month,compared to the current salary of Rs 117 and Rs 120 per day. The agitated employees came from different parts of the state to take part in the protest,resulting in many laboratories remaining shut. Karampal Sharma,a computer teacher from a government school in Jind says,My pay has not been released for eight months. Although most computer teachers are highly qualified with a Masters in Computer Application,the government is not paying us according to our qualification.We have been employed on a contract basis and get paid for only the days we work. We seek a decent salary, said an employee.
UT chief talks traffic and women safety issues
CHANDIGARH: Continuing with his practice of meeting city residents,UT police Chief,IGP RP Upadhyaya held an interactive session with the employees of Inofsys at Rajiv Gandhi IT Park on Tuesday. Although the interaction was supposed to be about spreading awareness about crimes against women,it turned into discussion about traffic problems around the city. The question of whether or not it should be mandatory for women on two wheelers to wear helmets was also raised.
Teachers and students collaborate for cultural event
CHANDIGARH: Trainee teachers of DEC Ed. (NTT) course of DAV Model School,Sector 15 held a a cultural function along with students of Government Model Senior Secondary School Sector10 called Colours of India. There were various events,including a choir singing patriotic songs,a Giddha performance and a fancy dress competition. The show was organized as part of the ongoing teaching practice of the teacher trainees.
PU prof selected for Raman Fellowship
CHANDIGARH: Nominated by the UGC,D.R. Rajesh Kumar,Assistant Professor,Physics Department,Panjab University (PU) was awarded the Raman Fellowship for Post Doctoral Research for Indian Scholars in the United States for the year 2013-14. Dr Kumar will work on Efficiency Improvement of Energy Harvesting Devices by Interface Modification at Florida International University,Miami. His expertise lies in the field of nano-material synthesis and their hybrid nano-composites with organic materials.
Hunger strike for star night
CHANDIGARH: Panjab University Students Union (PUSU),a student outfit from DAV College,Sector 10,went on a hunger strike on Tuesday,demanding they be allowed to have their annual star night. PUSU party in-charge Ravan Jain says,We will remain on a hunger strike until our demand is met. DAV College is a prestigious college and as the other colleges will continue with the annual event,so should ours.. The college authorities said that they will look into the matter.
Flash mob to promote PU science fest
CHANDIGARH: The Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) is organising the first inter-university science fest SCITRON 2013,to be held from February 27 to March 3. The events include a tree plantation drive,blood donation camp as well as a contest for the title of Mr Chandigarh on March 2. To promote the fest,the PUCSC organised a flash mob at the students centre on Tuesday.
Lecture on hunger strikes at PU
CHANDIGARH: Prof Ujjwal Kumar Singh,Chairperson of the Department of Political Science,Delhi University,delivered the 9th annual Pradeep Kumar Memorial lecture organized by the Department of Political Science,Panjab University (PU) on Tuesday. The theme of the lecture was Reclaiming Democracy: Political Fasts as a Mode of Resistance. He underlined their importance as a means to oppose injustice and commented on how it has become a technique for mass mobilisation.
Court fines 15 drunken drivers
CHANDIGARH: The court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday fined 15 people whose drivers licenses and car registration numbers had been impounded for drink driving. The offenders were fined between Rs 1,500 to 2,000 and were also made to stand till rising of the court. CJM Rajnish Kumar Sharma also stated that if challans of vehicles bearing the same registration numbers came to court a second time,the licenses would be canceled.
Man injured in road mishap in Sector 38
CHANDIGARH: A motorcyclist sustained serious injuries after he was hit by a car in Sector 38 on Tuesday evening. He was referred to PGIMER and the accused driver of the car had been detained by the police. The Police is yet to register a case as the doctors declared the injured unfit to give a statement.
