Cop,citizens save accident victim

Chandigarh: Owing to the quick and sharp response of the Chandigarh Police and city residents,a 38-year-old accident victim was saved. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital without waiting for an ambulance. Around 3.30 pm on Friday,a scooter ridden by Nisha Rani skidded after she lost balance on the vehicle at Matka Chowk. A traffic cop chose not to wait for an ambulance,instead stopped a Bolero car and took the victim to a nearby hospital.

Kumari Selja to flag off new train today

CHANDIGARH: Union Minister Kumari Selja will flag off a new express train between Ambala and New Delhi via Saharanpur and Meerut from Ambala Cantonment railway station at 11.15 am on Saturday. The Minister would travel in the new train up to Jagadhri Worskshop railway station. The new train has been started on the efforts made by Selja on the continuous demand made by the people from Ambala,Brara,Jagadhri and Yamuna nagar.

Youth Cong protest

Chandigarh: City unit of Youth Congress protested in Sector 30 against uprooting of trees for installation of a toe-wall. Protesters said that the trees had been planted by the former area councillor and had grown quite high. They added that after installing the toe-wall the size of the green belt would reduce. The delegation met Mayor Subhash Chawla asking him to look into the matter.

Two kidnapping cases registered in a week

PANCHKULA: Two girls,kidnapped in the last one week in Panchkula have not been traced so far,police said. According to police,two days ago,a case of kidnapping in the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl was registered at Chandimandir police station. She was kidnapped from her house in Barwala.

In another incident police registered a kidnapping case into the disappearance of a 21-year-old girl at Saketri in the Mansa Devi complex area.

Transfers of teacher leaders cancelled

CHANDIGARH: The education department on Friday cancelled transfers of four leader teachers of the Joint Action Committee,by reposting them in their original schools. The committee decided to withdraw the proposed protest on September 14,when the PM visits Chandigarh.

Man gets life term for murdering wife

CHANDIGARH: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Preeti Sahni on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife by setting her on fire. On February 6,2012,the guilty Ram Lakhan,a resident of Vikas Nagar of Mauli Jagran set his wife Anita on fire by pouring kerosene on her while she was cooking. The deceased was taken to Government Medical Specialty Hospital,Sector 16 and was later referred to PGI where she succumbed to the injuries. The accused was arrested after the victim told the Magistrate in her statement that her husband tried to kill. Police registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused with the Manimjara police. The accused had married Anita,a resident of Delhi in 2011,after the demise of his first wife. They had regular fights over petty issues and the police had even taken preventive action against the two on one occasion. The court observed in the judgment that while the defence argued that there is only one witness,the sole statement of the victim. There is settled law that the conviction can be made on the dying declaration alone.

Singer Preet Brar gets two weeks’ judicial remand

MOHALI: Punjabi singer Preet Brar was on Friday remanded in judicial custody by a Mohali court. Brar was detained last week at the Mumbai airport. He was then brought back by the Mohali Police on a transit remand for a land-fraud case registered against him with the Phase 8 police.

Brar was on Friday produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class Surabhi Prashar who remanded him in two-weeks of judicial custody.
