Hospital caught throwing waste in open
JALANDHAR: The municipal corporation has served notice on a hospital in Adarsh Nagar for throwing biomedical waste into a corporation dump. Disposing of biomedical waste in the open is illegal and a health hazard. The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) had taken action against six hospitals for a similar offence earlier. A Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ) team led by Assistant Commissioner DP Bharadwaj caught an employee of Makkar Hospital in Adarsh Nagar disposing of the waste,said Dr Varinder Kalia,MCJ Assistant Health Officer. The hospital has been asked to explain,Dr Kalia said,adding that MCJ will write to the PPCB for further action.
Parking near Golden Temple to be upgraded
AMRITSAR: To provide better parking infrastructure to tourists and devotees visiting the Golden Temple,the district administration has decided to outsource the operation and maintenance of two multilevel parking complexes near the shrine. DC K S Pannu said that Saragarhi and Kesari Bagh parking complexes would be outsourced through public private participation and the operators shall upgrade both the parking slots in terms of electronic infrastructure and thereafter,operate,maintain and manage it.
Dal Khalsa campaigns for 84 memorial
JALANDHAR: Perturbed over the dilly-dallying approach of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) to raise a memorial of June 1984 Operation Bluestar,the Dal Khalsa activists launched a frontal attack against the SGPC leadership. The members of the organisation,led by Sarbjit Singh Ghuman and Ranbir Singh distributed leaflets and posters in the city and gurudwaras. Members of the Sikh Youth of Punjab,led by Gurpreet Singh Mann also participated in the campaign. In a leaflet,the Dal Khalsa has posed certain questions to the present incumbent Avtar Singh Makkar. The group asked,why the SGPC is delaying the issue of the memorial for June 84 and castigated the SGPC for flipping on various sensitive issues.
Youth Cong membership drive from May 28
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) will start its membership drive in the state from May 28. Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president and Punjab Pradesh Congress president,Capt Amarinder Singh,will start the membership drive from Congress Bhavan in Chandigarh. PYC president,Ravnit Bittu said: The membership drive will last 28 days. Last time,around 3.5 lakh members enrolled for the drive and the target this year is more than 10 lakh members. Secretary of AICC and in-charge of IYC,Jitendra Singh,and president of IYC,Rajiv Satav,will be in attendance.
