Inspector General of Police (IG) Tejinder Pal Singh Luthra
What was your first step to improve the traffic problem in the city?
Well, the first step was to deal with the menace of drunken driving in the city. Recently, we came down heavily on these violators. Even the court supported us and awarded such violators a stern punishment, which is likely to serve as a deterrent for many others. We caught a number of drunk drivers and the court sentenced them to one-month imprisonment. We are going to continue with strict punishment. I think it will send a strong message to the traffic violators and they will think at least 10 times before driving their vehicle after getting drunk.
What are the new initiatives that you are going to take to curb traffic violations on city roads?
We have started making a proper schedule focusing on specific traffic violations on a particular day. It will also create awareness among motorists. We have started making a prior announcement about a particular day when we shall be focusing on a particular offence. Still, if people commit the violation, we shall be challaning them. But I personally feel that this kind of an endeavour will help us in curbing the traffic violations.
As far as road safety is concerned, besides focusing on traffic violations, what are the other priority areas?
Curbing the air pollution in the city is another area in which I am going to work hard. There are many vehicles which are causing immense air pollution. Although we keep challaning such motorists, in the coming days we shall be focusing on this offence specifically so that the vehicles that cause air pollution can be checked and violators be asked to get their vehicles’ engines checked.
