The Chandigarh master plan suggests that green corridors are to be made along the main arteries and within the neighbourhood sectors. (File) As part of a pilot project, the Chandigarh administration is all set to begin the construction work on two green corridors next week. The work will begin according to the master plan where 11 vertical green corridors have been planned in the city.
The work on both corridors under the project will be completed within six months.
Both corridors will be along the seasonal stream – N Choe – under the non-motorised transport (NMT) project to ensure that they deliver a safe cycling experience to residents of City Beautiful.
“The work will be completed within six month of both the corridors. Under Phase-1, the work on the green corridor – which will be of 8 km – will begin from Sector 42 to Sector 53 via Butrela-Badheri villages, and under Phase-2 – which will be or around 10 km – will start from Rajendra Park, Sector 3, War Memorial and Bougainvillea Garden, Sector 10, Leisure Valley, Sector 16, Heritage houses, Rose Garden/Shanti Kunj, Sector 23, Bamboo Garden, Traffic Park, Bal Bhawan, Sector 36, Fragrance Garden, Sector 42,” a senior official of the Chandigarh engineering wing said.
With the objective of promoting non-motorised transport in the city, Chandigarh administration has identified 11 green corridors, running from the northern to southern parts of the city. These 11 corridors will be developed this year.
What does master plan suggest?
The Chandigarh master plan suggests that green corridors are to be made along the main arteries and within the neighbourhood sectors. It states that the “pedestrian and cyclist movements” are to be facilitated both within the neighbourhood sector as well as along the main circulation arteries.
“The success of MRTS (Mass Rapid Transport System) is directly linked to enabling last mile connectivity. Walking to an initial bus stop, an interchange between bus and metro, within a metro station and end of the trip is important,” suggests the CMP.
