Chandigarh Police asks Mohali, Panchkula cops to stop protesters on borders

According to the UT Police officials, they have to depute the force in different parts of the city as on average, the city witnesses 30 protests every day.

THE CHANDIGARH Police has asked the Mohali and Panchkula police forces to stop protesters in the neighbouring towns from coming towards the city’s borders. The Chandigarh Police has said the protesters should be stopped in Mohali and Panchkula. The step has been taken as the city has to witness large and small protests every day.

According to the UT Police officials, they have to depute the force in different parts of the city as on average, the city witnesses 30 protests every day. The officials said that the force has to waste the energy to handle the protests which affect the routine work. If protesters come from Mohali or Panchkula side then extra force along with water cannons and other equipment is required to be sent to stop the protesters on the borders.

UT Inspector General of Police R P Upadhyay asserts that it is difficult for the force to simultaneously keep tabs on the protests in the city and then go to the borders to stop the protesters coming from Punjab and Haryana. That is why they have requested the Mohali as well as Panchkula police to stop the protesters on their borders.

“We have to take care of the VIP movements and then there are protests in the city. To stop the protesters at the Punjab and Haryana borders, we need to make extra efforts. A lot of our people get stuck there which affects the routine work of the police,” he told Chandigarh Newsline.

The protesters who come from Punjab are stopped in Sector 53 near Geeta Bhawan which is located on Chandigarh-Mohali border while the protesters coming from Haryana are stopped at Housing Board light point. For stopping these protesters, the UT Police has to depute water cannons and 200 to 250 police personnel.

Recently, the protesting members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) were stopped by the police from entering into Chandigarh and water cannons were also used. Some farmers got injured in the incident. Now the members of the union are going to stage a protest against the UT Police in Mohali in the coming days.
