Chandigarh: Mock drills at major health facilities to check Covid preparedness

Chandigarh: Mock drills at major health facilities to check Covid preparedness

Due to the recent surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in the city and as per the instructions of MOHFW, a mock drill was carried out at the major health facilities — GMSH-16, Civil Hospitals Sector 45, 22, Manimajra, GMCH-32 and PGI — to assess the preparedness of the department regarding Covid-19 .

This included the OPD assessment, Covid lab testing, Covid reporting, home isolation advice / admission protocols, shifting of patients to the ward and ICU, availability of Covid-related drugs and equipment, working ambulance services etc.

The officials also checked the availability of oxygen in the hospital and also visited the PSA oxygen plant, the room with oxygen cylinders and the liquid oxygen plant to have a first-hand view.

A preparation for the surge of cases of COVID-19 and a mock drill was held in GMCH-32, preceded by a meeting of the heads of departments. The data of the institute regarding Covid facilities has already been sent to the authorities. Area 33, Block A, has been designated as the Covid area and the doctor on duty in the Covid area will take a final decision if the patient requires hospitalisation or home isolation. Till the Covid area is opened, the patient will be isolated in the emergency area itself.

Lift number 4, Block A, has been designated as the Covid lift and a dedicated corridor has been earmarked for transferring the patient from emergency area to area 33, which has 15 beds fully equipped with ventilators so that they could be used either as oxygen beds or ventilator beds depending upon the condition of the patient. A round of the oxygen facility and the gas tanks was also undertaken by the team and these were found to be fully operational.

Requisite medicines have been indented and are now available with the pharmacy department. The hospital has an adequate supply of masks, PPE kits, digital thermometers and pulse Oximeters in cases of exigency. The RRT (Rapid Response Team) for the South Zone was reactivated and will function from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and after that the dedicated mobile of RRT will be handed over to the in-charge, who will attend the calls and alert the doctors. The government of India regulations regarding home isolation will be strictly followed by the RRT team, who will maintain the register of all the telephonic calls made and received by the control room.

The duty hours of screening OPD were increased and thermal scanners have been made available for the care of patients coming for testing to the screening OPD.

In Panchkula, mock drills were undertaken in various hospitals to check Covid preparedness, including inspection of bed status for Panchkula district.
