International flights, according to experts, are going to make a big impact on the region as far as business is concerned. The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has already set up housing as well as commercial projects along the airport road.

“The airport is situated at a central place which is accessible. This will help people take maximum advantage of the facility,” says Sanjeev Vashist, president of Mohali Industries Association (MIA).

Vashist, who approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for starting international flights, believes with the start of the international flights, Mohali will get maximum benefit as new hotels will come up and other businesses will flourish in the district. Investment in the region will increase too.

“When connectivity becomes easy, investment increases in the region. The district can become the industrial hub in the coming days as big companies like Infosys are coming to the city. With the arrival of new companies, employment will increase too,” says Vashist.

Asserting that they worked hard to get these flights started, Anurag Aggarwal, former MIA president, says the region will have connectivity with the Gulf region which will bring investment. He hopes that after the Gulf countries, flights will also be started for European and other countries.

“Security of passengers will improve. There were a lot of incidents when people after landing in Delhi were either murdered or robbed by gangs in connivance with some taxi drivers while travelling to their destinations in the region. Now if someone lands in Mohali, it will become easier for him or her to reach his or her destination,” says Aggarwal.

The airport can also help revive the struggling real estate market in the city. Shailander Anand, former chairman of Mohali Properties Consultants Association (MPCA), says that with the start of the airport, rates of land will increase as more companies will invest in the region and more people will come to live and they will require land for building their houses.

“Right now there is a slump in real estate market. We hope that the market will be revived, we have been waiting for this for long,” says Anand.
