Chandigarh: One booked for uploading PU student’s phone number on porn sites

Police said the student had been receiving at least 60 calls, including video and audio calls from various WhatsApp numbers till Friday, and she could not clear her exams due to it.

Cyber cell Saturday booked one person for uploading the mobile phone number of a woman student of Panjab University on at least three porn websites. The number was uploaded in September when the student was preparing for her annual examination.

Police said the student had been receiving at least 60 calls, including video and audio calls from various WhatsApp numbers till Friday, and she could not clear her exams due to it. According to police, the suspect was identified and he is known to the student.

Police sources said the mobile number was uploaded on the porn websites on September 23 and the student reported the matter to UT police on September 25. The student had filed a written complaint at a public window in Sector 9 police headquarters. The complaint was forwarded to the cyber cell for further investigation.

In her statement to police, the student said, “I am getting video call and text messages from around 50-60 unidentified person with authenticated WhatsApp accounts. From further investigation, I came to know that my number has been updated on porn sites.”

“We managed to remove her mobile number from at least three porn sites. We obtained the list of all WhatsApp numbers from which video and audio calls were made. The student told us she did not have suspicion on anyone. Later, we identified the suspect and informed her. He will be arrested soon,” a police officer said.

When contacted, the student refused to make any comment. This year alone, the cyber cell of UT police has registered 31 FIRs in connection with the misuse of mobile numbers and Facebook profiles of people, especially women.
