In what will facilitate clearing of backlog of cases in the Chandigarh District Courts,the central government has given its sanction to additional ten posts for judges in these courts.
At present the district courts have a sanction of 20 judges. With ten more,it will now be 30. A letter of sanction received from the central government was produced Tuesday by the Administration before the Punjab and Haryana High Court during the resumed hearing of a petition.
Increasing the sanction from 20 to 30,the Centre has also given a go ahead for staff required for additional judges. Over 70,000 cases are pending in the Chandigarh District Courts.
On the last hearing,the High Court had given Chandigarh Administration the last opportunity to forward the proposal regarding increase in sanctioned strength of judges in the district courts to the central government.
In 2011,the High Courts administrative division had sent a proposal to the Administration seeking more judges.
The proposal was to be sent to the central government for clearance,but it was forwarded to the Centre in May this year,after a delay of two years.
Peeved,the High Court had directed the Administration to expedite the process. Taking a suo motu notice of the Administrations lackadaisical attitude,the court,on a previous hearing,had asked the Administration to explain the delay.
It also directed the Administration to place the status report of various proposals relating to the creation of new posts,conversion of various temporary posts into permanent posts and continuation of various posts of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and district courts.
Taking the letter sent by the central government on record,the High Court on Tuesday disposed of the
petition.
