The PEC University of Technology conducted a PhD entrance test on Monday at 10 am. Of the nine candidates present for the test in the Civil Engineering Department, five of them boycotted the entrance test. They rued that the syllabus and scheme of examination was not made available to them and questions of the test were not from the relevant field of doctoral studies of interest.
The candidates said they were informed about the test only after reaching the campus on Monday morning. The candidates said when they approached the PEC director,he did not show any concern to solve their problems and asked them to move court. The candidates who boycotted the examination included
Y P Singh, who happens to be a gold medalist from PEC. The candidates alleged that Dr S K Arora, the invigilator, asked candidates not to appear in the test and complain to the director.
The pattern on which the examination was conducted serves no purpose. A candidate should be made to sit in the examination of the subject he intends to pursue his PhD in and not any other subject. Also, the syllabus was not framed and informed to the candidates in time, said Y P Singh.
Some Research Degree Committee (RDC) members informed that they were not consulted by the head in deciding about the procedure to be followed and the head has acted on his own acted unilaterally in the entire process. All the four candidates who appeared for the test were declared pass and were later interviewed. We have demanded a thorough enquiry into the irregular activities of the HOD of the Department Dr Kalra in Ph D admission, said one of the affected students.
The rules and procedures of the PEC University of Technology as circulated by the dean dated August 12 were also flouted by the HOD of Civil Engineering in PhD admissions. The future of the many eligible candidates put to stake by the irregular activities of the Head,Civil Engineering. Even the full time non-sponsored candidates were made conditionally eligible and asked for GATE score which is not required as per eligibility conditions in the brochure.
It is also known that even a retired professor in applied science was given a PhD candidate in management. Even ineligible candidates were permitted to appear in the test and interview in applied science.
