Cab fares to increase in city

The hike in the price of diesel is likely to have an impact on public transport in the city.

The hike in the price of diesel is likely to have an impact on public transport in the city. The operators of radio taxis in the city will propose an increase in the fares in the coming days. Chandigarh Transport Undertaking had received less grants in the budget this year for diesel for its buses. A revised proposal is likely to be sent.

The cost of diesel of the CTU buses amounts to Rs 12 lakh a day. The amount is likely to increase by Rs 1.5 lakh per day after the hike. The CTU buses on an average cover a distance of 30,000 km per day. The budget approved for purchasing diesel in the last financial year was less than what was required. The additional funds were approved later. Till these were approved, several buses were stalled.

The same situation is present this year as well with the budgetary allocation being less than what is required. CTU officials state that with an increase in the price of diesel, more funds will be asked for in the revised budgetary estimates. CTU had earlier proposed a hike in the fares, which, however, had not been approved. Officials now state that a hike in the fares is likely to be proposed soon.

The operators of the radio cabs meanwhile state that they will be proposing a hike in the fares shortly. A cab operator claimed that the cost of operations will increase by Rs 1 lakh a month. Also with the increase in diesel prices, the cost of other essential commodities is likely to go up. Due to this,a hike in the fare is likely. He added that the last time the fares were hiked,it took the Administration almost a year to reach a decision.

Meanwhile, chairman of Federation of Sectors Welfare Association,Chandigarh,P C Sanghi condemned the hike saying that household budgets will be disturbed. “The increase in cost of diesel will have a spiraling affect on other commodities. The price of electricity has also increased. The residents are being burdened by this,” said Sanghi.
