Bright Nights

For some time now the city’s mood-o-meter has been rather somber.

For some time now the city’s mood-o-meter has been rather somber. While the weather is partly to blame,it’s also because of all that gloomy talk about economic meltdowns and global recession doing the rounds. Thankfully,it’s been a passing phase and invites to let your hair down and have a good time have re-appeared once again. To get the momentum going restaurants and lounge bars in the city are livening up the late hours with special theme-based events. At the restrobar ‘Black Magic’ tucked away in the DLF City Centre Mall, you can pick and choose the evening according to your mood. “From romantic nights to Sufi specials to evenings dedicated to just popular Bollywood music,we have chalked out a theme for almost each day of the week,” informs Munish Arora, one of the promoters of the restrobar. Surprisingly, apart from weekends,‘slow’ days like Mondays and Wednesdays are also being brought into action. “It’s best to throw up surprises once in a while,” Arora smiles to say.

Meanwhile at Score, the lounge and nightclub in Sector 8,parties are getting new flavours. “To make sure the music is new and the party scene doesn’t feel mundane we have started to invite celebrity DJs at least twice a month,” mentions the club’s manager Harinder Singh Saini as he talks of the recently held ‘Eristoff Howling Night’ that played to a packed house. This special event saw the experimentative band Y-Mood from Bangalore rock party enthusiasts with their electro percussive live act. “A special event teamed with bar and menu specials always promises to bring in the crowds,” admits Saini who promises that a retro night is on its way soon.

Speaking of specials, ever since Orchid Lounge in Sector 34 rolled out its ‘Punjabi lounge’ evenings with city-based duo Sukhmani and Hari Singh, bagging a table on a Wednesday night is becoming no easy feat. “The combination of fine food and the refreshing music has been really well accepted. It’s like an icing on the cake,” owner Priya Jagat smiles to say. Given the response to their Sufi event held at Whispering Willows,Jagat is now hoping to put together another do once the weather improves.

Elsewhere, quick to realise that the city’s young and restless are eager to rock in a lounge-like ambience, entrepreneur Atul Grover rolled out ‘Rock in Rio’,a theme-based lounge bar a while back. Since its launch,‘Rock in Rio’ has continued to please serious music lovers with not just concert screenings but live gigs complemented with Continental food festivals as well. “Rock in Rio is my gift to Chandigarhians out there who love to rock and have a good time. So the party continues,” Grover assures.

Making sure their Hyderabadi food festival packed in not just authentic flavours but a similar mood as well was Hotel Western Court in Panchkula. The recently held festival spread over ten days saw Ustad Abdul Hafiz of Punjab Gharana accompanied by his son Ustad Fida Hussain perform all through the festival. “Today, diners relish not just a scrumptious menu at the restaurant but a complete outing experience,” the hotel’s group general manager Rajeev Kakkar points out. That explains this Wednesday’s album launch by ‘Party Girls’ at Zaika restaurant in Sector 26 that was followed up with a performance bash at the restrobar Voodoo. It’s all rocking once more!
