Badal asks SGPC to organise seminars to eradicate social evils
PATIALA: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal urged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to organise seminars addressed by eminent scholars and writers to help create awareness about the history of Sikhism. This,he said,could help create awareness among the public against various social evils like drugs,female foeticide and dowry. Addressing a function to release a book written by former SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar,the CM said the Punjab government was setting up memorials of martyrs who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of Sikh Panth and for the nation. Badungars book,Jinhan Dharam Nahin Hareya,talks about the martyrs who had not been accorded their due in history books. SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar,Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh and other Akali leaders were present at the seminar.

Farmers threaten protest on Sept 27
JALANDHAR:Farmers and farm labourers unions have announced to protest outside the Kartarpur police station,demanding action against the officers who caned protesters on Saturday and withdrawal of a case against Pendu Mazdoor Union leader Kashmir Singh Ghugshor,who was arrested too. Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan and general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri said the police action was completely illegal as police caned the protesters without orders from the magistrate concerned. They said the protest was justified as Powercom wanted to disconnect the power supply to farm labourers for not paying bills. They said the government had promised free power to the farm labourers and should keep it. The leaders said 17 organisations of farmers and farm labourers would gherao the Kartarpur police station on September 27 if Ghugshor was would be without any condition.
90 kg poppy husk seized
Moga:About 90 kilograms of poppy husk have been seized in two cases in this district since Saturday. Police said a team seized 40 kg of poppy husk from an alleged smuggler,Satnam Singh,from an area under the Dharamkot police station on Saturday. Singh,who was waiting for customers,however,managed to escape on seeing the police team,leaving behind the contraband,they said. In another second case,the police spotted a car and on suspicion signalled it to stop. However,all three occupants fled,dropping a bag containing 50 kg poppy husk.
