Sidhu against rescheduling of Amritsar-Toronto flight

Local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed his displeasure over the re-scheduling of the direct flight from Amritsar to Toronto through Delhi. He said though it was good that the flight service was being resumed by Air India from February 20,it was unfortunate that the flight would not go directly to Toronto,but via Delhi. He said this would inconvenience the passengers who would have to wait for long at the Delhi. Addressing the media on Tuesday,Sidhu said AI had failed to keep up with the aspirations of the people. “I want a high-level probe into the decision of diverting this flight. People have the right to know who is going to benefit from this diversion,” he said,adding that he would take up the issue in Parliament. He said the Amritsar-Toronto flight was a profit-making route and still it was being tampered with,adding that the airport’s full potential of becoming a a cargo hub was also not being realised. “With proper infrastructure in place,the airport can earn revenue up to Rs 400 crore annually from cargo services,” he said.

Balachaur panchayat secy ‘missing’

A deputation of the officials and employees of district rural development and panchayat department,sarpanchs,panchs and representatives of the local Lok Sangarsh Committee met senior civil and police officials to urge them to look into the mysterious “disappearance” of Sonu Gautam,Panchayat Secretary,Balachaur,since Monday. Karan Singh Rana,convenor of the Lok Sangarsh Committee,said Gautam was on duty to distribute lists of pension beneficiaries among the panchayats of Tonsa,Rail Mazra and Asron and never returned home. He feared Gautam might have been kidnapped when he was returning from Asron. His mobile phone has been switched off ever since. While members of the delegation threatened to launch an agitation if Gautam was not found soon,the police assured them of action.

23-year-old found murdered

Rajesh Kumar Bunti,23,who ran a small shop of cigarettes and tobacco at Anandpur Sahib,was found murdered in his shop on Tuesday morning. SHO Manveer Singh Bajwa said his body was first spotted by his father Ramcharan around 6 am. He said Bunti there were more than 15 stab wounds on the body. A case of murder has been registered. The police said a personal enmity seemed to be the motive behind the murder,though the family has not named any suspect.

Khadi board goes online

Local Bodies and Industries and Commerce Minister Manoranjan Kalia launched the website of Punjab Khadi and Village Industries Board here on Wednesday. Addressing the media,Kalia said the board had gone online after 55 years of its establishment by the Punjab government in 1956. The website provides a complete list of board’s functionaries,complete with their addresses and mobile numbers. Chairman Vijay Sampla said the board had achieved a lot after implementation of the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in the last two years,seeing an upswing of 150 per cent of the targets fixed. Sampla said the board was organising awareness camps to motivate prospective entrepreneurs to set up village industries under the PMEGP.

‘BBMB policies hit irrigation in Rajasthan’

The wrong policies of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) have affected the irrigation system in Rajasthan. MLA Gulab Chand Kataria,who is chairman of the committee constituted by the Rajasthan government to look into the possibilities of irrigation in the state,said this here on Wednesday. Kataria visited Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib along with other members of the committee. Talking to the media,he said: “Bhakra and Pong dams are not filled as per their capacity,which affects farmers in Rajasthan. During the establishment of these dams,it had been decided that Rajasthan would get 42 per cent water from them. But we are not getting our share.” In the last two years,he alleged,not even two meetings had been held in the presence of all partner states of BBMB.

10 kg heroin seized near Amritsar

Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized around ten kilograms of heroin worth Rs 50 crore from three persons travelling from Amritsar to Delhi. The recovery was made near Beas,about 45 kilometres from here. The DRI took the three — Tanveer Ahmad and Furkan of Muzaffarnagar (UP) and Shahid Ahmad Garhwal (Uttarakhand) — to Ludhiana where they are likely to be presented before the duty magistrate on Thursday. DRI officials said the heroin was supposed to have been smuggled from Pakistan and was being taken to the national capital.

Teach road safety in schools: Minister

Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal emphasised the need to introduce road safety as a subject from primary level in all government schools from the next academic session. The minister was presiding over a meeting of the Road Safety Council on Thursday. Officials of the departments of home,health,police,transport,education and local bodies were present. The minister said the drivers of PRTC and PUNBUS who had not met with any accident due to safe driving would be awarded at state-level functions. He also urged NGOs and other voluntary organisers to help the government make road safety a movement of the people by generating mass awareness to ensure fewer accidents,especially on the highways.

Labourer injured at Ropar thermal plant

An unskilled worker sustained severe injuries at the Guru Gobind Singh Super Power Thermal Plant in Ropar on Wednesday after he fell off a height of 50 metres. Police sources said the labourer was Gurpal Singh,a resident of Nuhu Colony of Ghannauli. He suffered multiple fractures in his legs,following which he has been admitted in PGI,Chandigarh.

Punjab to buy more dosages of bull semen

The Punjab government is buying another 1.5 lakh dosages of imported semen from the USA for buffaloes and cows. Talking to the media on Wednesday,Punjab Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike said: “The animal husbandry department has ordered 1.5 lakh dosages of semen as the present stock of 1 lakh dosages,which we expected to last for about six months,is almost over due to the good response from dairy farmers. Each dosage costs Rs 200 to the farmer.”
