New Delhi:A man who transported 162 kgs of poppy straw from Punjab to New Delhi has been sentenced to 10-year imprisonment and slapped with a fine of Rs 1 lakh by a special court here on Friday. Jagjeet Singh,31,a Punjab native was arrested in December,2009 by the Delhi Police and has now been convicted under various sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Teachers using guide books to face action

Chandigarh:Punjab government Friday warned of strict action against teachers who teach using guide books instead of working on the blackboard and using the textbooks in classrooms. Instructions to this effect have been issued to the education department following poor results in mathematics and science subjects in the board examinations. An official spokesman said it had been observed that students were forced to buy guide books in some areas of the state as their teachers also use the same in classrooms. He said the the school heads would have to impose a complete ban on use of guide books by teachers.

Mayoral election schedule announced

Chandigarh:Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Friday approved the mayoral elections for Patiala,Amritsar,Jalandhar and Ludhiana municipal corporations to be held on September 17,19,20 and 21 respectively. Sukhbir also appointed Education Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka (Patiala),Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia and Khadoor Sahib MP Rattan Singh Ajnala (Amritsar),former minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan (Jalandhar) and Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon (Ludhiana) as observers.

Sukhbir approves new urban policing plan

Chandigarh:Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday approved a new urban policing plan that would focus on increasing the presence of police personnel at the vulnerable points thereby instilling confidence among the masses. Reviewing the law and order situation with DGP Sumedh Singh Saini,Sukhbir said the DGP will monitor the deployment and review the situation every week.

Bathinda MC to host Mayors’ conference

Chandigarh:The Bathinda Municipal Corporation will host a national level mayors’ conference on September 15. A Local Bodies Department spokesman said it will be 105th Indian Council of Mayors’ Conference and all the mayors from different states will participate.

Guinea Ambassador inks education deal

Jalandhar:The Ambassador of the West African country of Guinea signed an agreement with a Jalandhar-based real estate,St Soldier group,in the fields of real estate,education and hospitality. Ambassador Alexendra Ceceloua said his country was making several Public private Partnerships for the development of their country. “Youth from Guinea will now come to St Soldier institutions to study. We also have around six million hectares to develop for education purposes.”

Second MBBS counselling at BFU

Ludhiana:Baba Farid University of health Sciences on Friday started the second counselling for the MBBS course on Friday while that for the BDS will begin on Saturday. The list of tentative vacancies put up the university on its website for which counselling was held today says 350 MBBS seats are available in the three government medical colleges in the state. There are 570 seats available in the five private medical colleges.
