Police accord warm welcome to Manjit; babus,leaders keep away

jalandhar: She may have won the country two golds at two prestigious sporting events — Commonwealth Games and the Asiad — in just under 45 days but the administration of her home district seemed loath to accord Manjit Kaur a hero’s welcome on her return to her city from China on Tuesday morning. Neither the district administrative authorities nor any politician of Jalandhar,which has nine MLAs,including two Cabinet ministers in the present Akali-BJP government,bothered to welcome the Golden Girl. However,Punjab Armed Police (PAP) authorities gave a warm welcome Kaur,who is an inspector with the police department and has been promoted as deputy superintendent.

New postings for 4 IAS officers

Chandigarh: The Punjab government issued transfer and posting orders to four IAS officers on Tuesday. According to the orders issued by the personnel department,B S Sudan has been posted as Secretary,Personnel,R K Gupta has been transferred as Secretary,Home Affairs and Justice,and A S Bains as Managing Director,Punjab State Warehousing Corporation. Anurag Verma has been given the additional charge of Director,Land Records Settlement.

Radio programme on women’s health

Chandigarh: The Punjab government,on the directions of the Centre,will broadcast a 15-minute radio programme every Wednesday and Sunday on nutrition and health of women and children. The programme will be aired at 12.15 pm. A spokesman of the government said the plan was especially chalked out to generate awareness among women about their health and nutrition. He said radio was chosen mainly because women could listen to the programme even while doing household chores.

Johl bats for Manpreet

Ludhiana: Eminent economist Dr S S Johl feels the approach that former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal has can help redeem Punjab. The two met in Ludhiana on Monday. Though Johl claimed it to be a private meeting,he admitted to discussing “certain issues concerning the state”. “It takes some level of character and grit for a person to give up a Cabinet rank,put at stake his entire career and then diligently pursue the issues. Manpreet is proceeding just the way he should and I am sure there will be a positive outcome of this exercise,” said Johl,adding that Manpreet told him he would not float any party.

Arms haul in Moga; 2 held

Ludhiana: The Moga police have busted a gang involved in manufacturing illegal arms. Senior Superintendent of Police Sneh Deep Sharma said the police recovered 21 pistols along with ammunition and arrested two persons from an abandoned house in Dala village. The house belongs to a former militant,Chamkaur Singh Kauri. The SSP said: “This is a huge recovery and these people used to supply illegal arms to the entire Malwa region. We had earlier arrested five more people and recovered three weapons from them. More people will be arrested who bought illegal arms from this gang.” He added that the police had not been able to establish any connection with militant activities yet. Those arrested are Gurdeep Singh Dhaliwal of Kothe Guru village in Bathinda district and Nirmal Singh Nimma of Dala village. They will be produced before a local court on Wednesday.
