Jalandhar/Chandigarh: The number of confirmed dengue cases touched 145 in Jalandhar on Tuesday against the overall figure of 250 in the state. The number of suspected cases has crossed 700. The Jalandhar Civil Hospital has 92 patients undergoing treatment for dengue. Talking to The Indian Express,Civil Surgeon Dr S K Gupta said the number of patients with low blood platelet count of 30,000 to 60,000 against the required 2-2.5 lakh had also crossed 200 in the civil hospital alone. A huge rush of patients can be seen at the hospital where they had been earlier told to bring their own folding beds. The authorities have now,however,made arrangements for beds. To deal with the rush,the authorities have tied up with the local ESI Hospital. A team of the state surveillance unit of the health department,comprising Dr Deepak Bhatia,project coordinator,Integrated Disease Surveillance Project,and Dr Gagandeep Singh Grover,state epidemiologist,visited Jalandhar on Monday to review arrangements for dengue patients. Dr Ashok Nayyar,Director,Health Services and Family Welfare,said all units were functioning round the clock to extract platelets from the donors and their smooth transfusion. Besides,additional five medical specialists,two medical officers,nine lab technicians and 22 staff nurses have been deployed at the civil hospital.

Doctor booked for medical negligence

Bathinda: The local police booked Dr Kuljeet Singh of Amar Hospital in Bhagta Bhai Ka near here for causing death of a 6-year-old boy due to negligence (Section 304 A of the IPC). A resident of Hamirgarh village,Sukhwinder was admitted to the hospital around 6.30 am on Tuesday after he complained of vomiting and diarrhoea. He died soon after,the police said,but the doctor allegedly attached an oxygen cylinder to his body and told the family to take the boy home,claiming that he was alright. Sukhwinder’s father Lakhvir blamed Dr Kuljeet for the death of his son. The irate family staged a dharna,placing the boy’s body at the site. SHO Manoj Kumar said the doctor was at large.

Punjab govt warns people against unauthorised use of National Emblem

Chandigarh: Taking a strong note of the unauthorised use of National Emblem in the Punjab territory,the government reiterated on Tuesday that this was punishable under the law. A spokesperson said the government had already issued detailed guidelines regarding its use and safeguards for checking its misuse. Under the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper use) Act 2005,the government has specified the list of constitutional or statutory authorities,ministries or departments of the Central government or union territories and other functionaries for use of the emblem. The spokesperson said no person would be allowed the emblem for the purpose of any trade,business and profession or in the title of any patent or in any trademark or design.
