Govt gets serious on capping abandoned wells to prevent deaths

chandigarh: In accordance with the directions of the Supreme

Court regarding the prevention of fatal accidents of small children due to their falling into abandoned bore wells and tube wells,the Punjab Government has issued fresh guidelines to the chief engineers of Water Resources,Public Health and Irrigation departments to ensure immediate strict compliance in the matter. A government spokesman said here on Monday that the Supreme Court had fixed the responsibility to cap the abandoned bore-wells in their respective areas on the district magistrates. The government has also asked the authorities concerned to conduct random inspection of abandoned wells as a preventive measure.

CBSE to offer local industry-based vocational courses from classes 9 to 12

Jalandhar: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Chairman Vineet Joshi on Monday revealed that CBSE is going to start vocational courses in its schools from the coming session as such courses would be based on the city-based industries. Joshi was here to attend a school function and meetings. Talking to the media at Cambridge Girls school he said vocational courses would be offered from classes 9 to 12.

Farmer commits suicide

bathinda: Ranjit Singh,a 37-year-old farmer of Jethuke village in this district,allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance on Sunday evening. Police said the deceased’s brother had told them that Ranjit was under debt,was divorced and had to return from Bahrain and Lebanon unsuccessfully with financial losses.

Honour killing: uncle kills niece

ludhiana: Love marraige is still a taboo in Punjab villages. A love affair came to a cruel end in Kotwal village of Ferozepur district when the maternal uncle Billa killed his neice Pooja and her boyfriend Rakesh. The two had been in love for the last two years and wanted to get married. However the girl’s family was against the marriage. Rakesh ,19,was a class 12 student while Pooja,17,had given up studies. An FIR has been registered but Pooja’s uncle is absconding.

One held for rape of minor

Bathinda: The police here have arrested Lakha Singh,aged around 30 and a resident of Kutiwal Khurd,for the rape of a six-year-old girl. The girl,police said,was raped after she went to Lakha’s house to play with his children.
