Baghdad Gurdwara to be renovated

AMRITSAR: All is set for the restoration of the only gurdwara at Baghdad in Iraq,as the Sikhs have decided to take the kar sewa of the 15th century Sikh shrine,built in the memory of Guru Nanak Dev. The gurdwara was destroyed during the 2003 US invasion of Iraq. The chairman of International Sikh Council,Mukhtiar Singh Assal,said on Sunday that the Embassy of Iraq had invited him to visit the gurdwara and take up its restoration work.

Applications for Bhim awards

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Department has invited applications for Bhim Awards for the year 2011-12. Six outstanding sportspersons,who have distinguished themselves in recognised international and national sports events during the last three years,are honoured with the Bhim Awards. It carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh,a replica of Bhim,a scroll,a blazer and tie or scarf. Applications should reach the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs by July 31.

New authority to empower women

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government has constituted a state mission authority (SMA) under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister to empower women socially,economically and educationally. Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Geeta Bhukkal said that the mission will monitor and review gender budgeting as well as effective implementation of various social laws.
