Students make most of the 30-minute breathers on campus
Who doesnt love a small break during hectic work hours? While some may find the idea of munching on snacks coupled with a hot cup of tea as worthwhile, for others theres more to a tea-break than just that. Making the most of their half hour break are umpteen groups of students on Panjab University campus. With lectures peppered all long the day, starting as early as 9 am and ending as late as 5 pm,the break in the middle,as we found out,is rather well-utilized. For the management students,it is all about running down to a cyber cafe to download information and prepare presentations. That is followed up with a practice session with the projector before the final go,shares Ravi Arora,a second year student of the University Institute of Management Studies. Elsewhere, students from the Department of Social Work choose to utilize their break to get their questionnaires filled and their surveys completed. Besides conducting the surveys, the students often prepare and rehearse street plays that they perform at different places in the city including the University. Also packing in much action are the various engineering students who prefer to sit with their professors and discuss projects over some steaming cups of tea.
When it comes to the 30-minute breather, students of Mass Communication and Computer Applications are no different in making the most of their break time. We have research projects that need proper guidance. So we often sit with our guides and work out the details of the project during the break, informs Kapil Gautam,a second year student of the School of Communication Studies. Interestingly, the one activity that keeps the students on their toes during the break is a visit to the Photostat shops to get notes Xerox-ed. The books by international authors are very expensive and only few topics are related to our syllabus. So most of us get the required material Xeroxed from the book, points out Preeti Verma,a second year student of M.Sc at Panjab University.
Duing the tea breaks, when the canteen at the various departments are chock-a-block,students are often found discussing the days newspaper and many a times these discussions end up in heated debates. Since most of the departments in the University have their annual fests, the breaks are also utilized for conducting student meetings, locating sponsorships and organizing the events. For the final year students in all the disciplines, breaks also translate into making calls to companies for recruitments! We have to locate suitable companies and then we call them to conduct interviews for placement. All this work has to be done during the break time since we dont get time due to our hectic schedule, says Saurav Sharma,a final year student of UIMS.
The half hour break is also a good time for students to head to the library and get books issued. But if you thought the break hour was just about slogging some more, there are those who prefer to take a breather by either reading a book or hopping into their vehicles to take a round of the campus or settling in a cyber cafe for some online chatting. And you thought it was just about samosas and tea!
