The London Metropolitan Police on Monday charged two Indian-origin men for intent to cause grievous bodily harm to 78-year-old Lt Gen (retd) K S Brar,who led the Army in Operation Bluestar in 1984. Since Brars injuries were not life-threatening,the police downgraded the charges from attempt to murder to intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Barjinder Singh Sangha (33) of Wolverhampton and Mandeep Singh Sandhu (34) of Great Barr,Birmingham will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates Court today, the London Metropolitan Police said in a statement. Two men have been charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm on Lieutenant-General Kuldip Singh Brar in Old Quebec Street, it added. Sangha has also been charged with common assault of Brars wife Meena.
Brar,who had led Operation Bluestar in 1984 to flush out Khalistan militants from the Golden Temple,was on a private visit to London when he was attacked by four men suspected to be Khalistan sympathisers while he was returning to his hotel with his wife. While he suffered a wound on his neck and cheek,his wife was not injured.
Meanwhile,the Scotland Yard,in an appeal to the people,have stated: Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have information about the incident. In particular,they want to speak to those people who assisted the wife and the victim at the scene following the attack.
The four men,who attacked Brar,were described as being of Asian in appearance,with long beards,and were wearing long black jackets. The police are tightlipped about the other two attackers. In all 12 persons,including two women had been taken into custody following the assault.
Meanwhile,a spokeswoman of the Metropolitan Police told PTI that a 27-year-old man has been arrested yesterday from West London and he remain in police custody.
The police had also taken into custody three others on suspicion of immigration matters unconnected with investigation into the attempted murder. The three were referred to the UK Border Agency.
