Romance,a Punjabi wedding, confusion, complications, heartbreaks and finally,a happy ending. Komal Mehtas Nick of Time has all the masala of a Bollywood movie and its not hard to see why. Mehta has been working in movie marketing for three years, and the influence is apparent in her first novel.
I tried to write a book that is a classic Indian romance,is everybodys story, deals with issues of love, friendship and life in urban India, but is not too dramatic, says Mehta, who visited Chandigarh to launch the novel.
Nick of Time (Penguin,Rs 150) tells the story of Alehya, who returns to Chandigarh after 10 years for her friend Shaguns wedding, only to realise that her future husband Vicky,is a man she hates, well almost. Love and hate collide and theres a complete turn of events as Alehya becomes attracted to her best friends fiance.
A frequent visitor to the city,Mehta says that, when she thought of the plot, she decided it had to be a Punjabi wedding. Punjabis have the grandest weddings and Chandigarh is known for its share of these, she adds. There were many references around me,the friendships we share, the choices we have, and the confusion it causes. Urban India is a strange place to be in,and relationships today are a reflection of the fast-changing times, she says.
