It’s unlikely that you will ever find anything common between a potted plant,a pear,an ice-cream sundae and a camel outside of a Judith Leiber store. The American luxury brand, known for its crystal-studded clutches (or minaudieres) in exciting shapes, has over the last few decades, redefined the idea of a handbag and how much they can be worth. Handcrafted like pieces of art, with attention to detailing, these ornamental clutches (priced Rs 1 lakh onwards) have turned out to be best friends of red carpet regulars and the ultimate sign of exclusivity have also graced the arms of nearly every First Lady of the US.
The brand, which has been present in India since 2007,and has befriended almost all Bollywood leading ladies, seems to have shifted gears last year. Its fast making inroads into Tier-II cities by way of trunk shows. Though the state of Punjab, says Varsha Ahuja, brand manager for Judith Lieber in India, has always figured in their serious-business-potential list,Chandigarh is a city shes been very keen to reach out to. We have many clients who come to our store in Delhi. We now realise that an increasing number of fashionistas from this city are well-informed and keen on luxury products such as ours, says Ahuja, who rolled out a two-day trunk show in Chandigarh on Saturday. The show is being hosted in collaboration with the multi-designer store,Adaah Couture,in Sector 8.
Also part of the Indian line-up is the colourful Maharaja bag and the conch shell. The latter is a life-size shell in blazing gold and silver. The luxury label has had an India connect not just through the shapes of its products but also through its collaboration with one of Indias most well-known couturiers Suneet Varma. The Suneet Varma for Judith Leiber collection has been very popular and the designer is now working on a collection marking the 50th anniversary of Judith Leiber, says Ahuja.
The trunk show is also exhibiting a mix of bags such as the ice-cream sundae and the zodiac collection. These are aimed at a young bride who is looking to add to her trousseau a minaudiere that can become an heirloom piece, says Ahuja. Realising that opulence is an intrinsic part of the Punjabi wedding and the adjectives big and fat have become synonymous with this phenomenon,Ahuja is hoping Judith Leiber is party to those celebrations. Chandigarh is on the threshold of a luxury boom, and coming here underscores the brands commitment to Indias burgeoning luxury market, she sums up.
