Bling it on!

It seems like such a contrast from the last season. There we were celebrating sombere shades like beiges and pale pinks with just about a hint of embellishments and here we are now raising a toast to colour. If you are a bride-to-be and haven’t really figured out the trends,we’ll put a finger on them for you. While the last couple of seasons were all about understated elegance, this year the wedding lehenga is giving recession a thumbs down. One look at the bridal line-up launched at Samsaara, the one-stop designer shop at Taj and and you can’t help but gape at the stone-studded ensembles that make the most of colour and figure-slimming silhouettes. At the same time blouses like corsets and backless cholis, puff sleeves, experimental necklines are in. As far as colours go,it’s a riot of magentas, deep maroon, burnt orange and the likes. “Remember the Anaarkali suits that boasted of umpteen ‘kalis’,well, time to flaunt them all over again as Kalidaar suits with tight lycra churidaars are back,” lists out Divya at Samsaara as we notice traditional embellishments too making their way back in. Speaking of comebacks, velvet, the soft and silky fabric is no longer just for cozy razais! In fact the fabric is making an an appearance on all ensembles formal. Yes,velvet, the fabric that died away on the trend-o-meter some years back is clocking big again. “It’s really a winter favourite and the rich colours make it an ideal pick for a bride to be,” adds Divya.

Interestingly, when it comes to putting together a trousseau,city-based designer Shweta Khanna points out that the bride is getting practical too. “Apart from packing in formal wear, most brides opt for smart tunics, kurtis that are dressy yet practical,” mentions Khanna who has put together a collection for the season that brings in festive wear styled out of fabrics like cotton, kora, voile, net, crepe and georgettes. “It’s a really a good time to play up tones like aubergine, violets, fuschia, plum, peach, indigo are in vogue with embellishments such as gold sequin and crystal work,” lists out the designer who is showcasing the collection at her studio Daffodils in Sector 17.
