With just a week to go for the first phase of Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections on December 28,the state BJP on Wednesday said one of its main polls planks would be to highlight the weakness of Congress as an Opposition in the state, juxtaposed to developments brought in by the BJP government despite being ignored by the Centre.

Talking to the media in Shimla,BJP spokesperson Ganesh Dutt said: “Despite being in Opposition, the Congress could lend a helping hand in development of the state by pursuing the state’s interests with the Central government led by the Congress. But it kept silent and played a negative role when it came to asking for the state’s rights.”

Party in-charge for PRI elections H N Kashyap said: “BJP members contesting election of urban local bodies as Independents against party candidates had been given enough time to withdraw, but they did not. Finally, action has been recommended against them and that will be expulsion from the party for six years.”

State BJP president Khimi Ram said 29 such dissidents from 10 districts had been expelled from primary membership of the party.

Jan 3 is holiday

The Shimla district administration has declared January 3 as a public holiday at places where polling for election to urban local bodies are scheduled on the day. A notification to this effect was issued by Deputy Commissioner J S Rana on Wednesday.
