Next Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh may be one-and-half years away but BJPs sitting MP Dr Rajan Sushant is already in a rebellious mood to make things tough for Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal .
Sushant, who was a minister in the previous Dhumal government in 1998,has already toured Kangra,Chamba and Mandi districts to mobilise support for his drive against corruption. He has now convened a meeting of his supporters in Delhi on May 1. He has plans to organise rallies at Una and Mandi on May 8 and 22 respectively. The party,so far, hasnt been able to question Sushant and is now waiting for the Central leadership to intervene before the party MP gets more aggressive in the coming days.
What has really caused unease in the party is Sushants demand for narco-analysis test of the CM and his Cabinet ministers to come clean and prove their commitment to fight corruption.
He has threatened to issue a list of corrupt persons, occupying high positions in the state and also resigning from the Parliament.
Sushant,a three-time MLA,was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009 from Kangra. He lobbied for an Assembly ticket for his wife from the seat he had vacated but was cold-shouldered by the party. The bye-election was won by Congress.
I have nothing to fear or lose. My drive against corruption and ending injustice with Himachal is not an act of indiscipline. Well, yes there are people (BJP leaders) who are really disturbed by my actions and now want to get me thrown out of the party, he told The Indian Express over phone from Delhi.
Party insiders say state BJP President Khimi Ram has already written to the party High Command informing about certain statements of Sushant, which he claims are bound to severely damage the BJP. He has indulged in anti-party activities holding protests and criticising policies of the government. I really wonder if he is plotting his own ouster from the party, Khimi Ram says.
The party,in order to counter his public campaign, has advised all MLAs and ministers to keep a distance from him.
A meeting of the ministers and party leaders held last week at the residence of Horticulture minister Narinder Bragta discussed a counter-strategy. The ministers and party MLAs proposed a meeting with senior Central leaders in Delhi to seek action against Sushant or give him a clear warning to follow party discipline.
If he really wants to fight the government and party,he should first resign both from the party and the Parliament and then take his battle to the streets. We will be happy if he gets enough support to his campaign, said a Cabinet minister.
