Comedian Bharati Singh did,& girls are following suit
Talk less…keep quiet…sit properly…girls dont behave like this, Bharati Singhs childhood was punctuated with commas and full stops reserved especially for her kind – girls. There were rules for everything; but they are meant to be broke arent they, Bharati flouted them left, right and centre, stripped off the nice girl image and took on the challenge of something girls are conditioned to be kilometers away – laughter and comedy. The irony is that if a girl cracks a double meaning joke, shes considered loose, but if a man does it,hes lauded! So,with the kind of real life comedy act I had sans double entendres,I was sure I wont get past the first stage, but I did and made it all the way long, the bubbly comedian from Amritsar with her expressive acts and fine comic timing shattered many a glass ceilings and proudly made way for other girls to join the ranks. They used to say no more Bharati, now they say we want more! the 23-year-old graduate from Guru Nanak Dev University,Amritsar proved her point and ended up as the second runners up of Laughter Challenge II. She also received Kalpana Chawla Award of Excellence for her contribution and achievement in stand-up comedy. Active in theatre, sports, especially archery,Bharatis a National Level Rifle shooter as well. But nothing compares to her feat in comedy, and shes back with seven-year-old Nandini Kapoor from Nagpur on Colors Chhote Miyan,Bade Miyan. Oh,shes like my mother,my ustad correcting me constantly, Bharati confesses that she was a little apprehensive of whether this little girl will be able to perform. But children can surprise you,and Nandinis a fast learner, she says.
A believer of doing one thing at a time,Bharati says this way she can keep the pressure off her. Too much at a time stresses me,confuses me and I tend to lose focus, she shares.
Quiz her about Lalli, the little girls character she created and Bharati says Lallis her childhood. You know how children are full of questions? I had plenty of them too but was always told to keep quiet and behave like a good girl…well, those questions finally found an answer at Laughter Challenge when Lalli took centre stage. Long live Lalli!
