The pitch is set for Fridays elections of the District Bar Association as two groups led by N K Nanda and A S Chahal have left no stone unturned to woo the voters. While the allotment of chambers remains the main agenda,it is the mandate of non-practicing lawyers which will play a crucial role in deciding the fate of the candidates, said sources.
The two camps have raised the same issue of allotment of chambers in the new district courts at the Judicial Academy in Sector 43. The votes, therefore, seem to be equally divided among the active Bar members. The votes of non-practising members of the Bar Association will play a crucial role, said a senior member of the body.
This time,a member will be allowed to vote only after furnishing an affidavit that he or she has not cast their vote at any other Bar Association, said Harsh Tandon, the returning officer. Observers Vinod Chodha and Saurabh Joshi have also been appointed by the Bar Council of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Joshi said transparent and smooth process will be ensured in the polls.
Meanwhile, the candidates in the fray made last-minute efforts to win supporters on Thursday.
A member said he had received about 35 text messages from the candidates today. Not only messages, the candidates have employed all possible ways to attract voters. Members have been taken for lunches and parties in the last few days, said Aman Sudarshan Modgil,a member of DBA.
On the other hand, candidates for the post of president listed out their agenda. We have met with the Law Minister and discussed the issue of allotment of chambers. We are in favour of providing chambers for free with only a nominal monthly rent thereafter, said Amar Singh Chahal, contesting for the post of president.
If elected,I would like to promote and encourage young lawyers, he added. As for N K Nanda, the same issue of chambers holds utmost importance. I would like that the 440 proposed chambers at the Judicial Complex are allotted under a self-financing scheme, he said. There are over 2,000 eligible voters in the District Bar Association and as per an estimate, around 1000 are expected to exercise their franchise on Friday between 9.30 am to 4 pm.
