There’s no one style that’s set to rule this summer of 2009. From huge hold-alls to eccentric clutches,big to petite,canary yellow to prune purple…just suit yourself!

Then the blacks melted into greys to reappear in metallic shades and bags were no longer insipid carry alls. Today,the handbag is not just an accessory but something more important. Ok,before this piece of writing begins to read like a down memory lane column,well quit reeling out the history of the handbag and tell you straight up that the season has taken a turn and summers on the doorstep (dont be fooled by the untimely downpour). As every woman of fashion will agree,a new season translates into new styles and trends. So whats it going be for handbags? Is it okay to hold on to a Hobo from 2007 or will the pink tote you picked last winter pull you through summer as well? To help unzip those questions,we headed to the bag biggies in the city. Heres how to arm yourself for 2009.

Last season big ruled,but I feel medium numbers are safe bets, tells Gill who feels wide,comfortable bags rule. Dittos Ramanjit Kaur Makkar,Director,Handbags and Accessories for the brand Momak. Momaks spring-summer collection makes the most of both voluminous handbags as well as sleek clutches, she tells.

COLOUR CODED: This is the best part. Have you ever slung over a yellow slouchy? Or strutted around with prune purple bag over your arm? How about a crimson red clutch? This summer colour is at play even with bags. Purple is a big colour this season. As is orange,green,blue,pink and more, admits Gill as he shows us pretty polka dotted bags in candy colours. At Da Milano,Sector 17,the colour palette is pretty vibrant,specially with their range of snake skin handbags for women as part of the Spring Summer 2009 collection. This collection,designed in our studios by Italian designers is crafted from top quality leathers dyed and embossed to look like a snake skin that is a popular texture in handbag design across fashion capitals of the world currently, tells Sahil Malik,Managing Director,Da Milano as we notice colours ranging from sunflower yellow,prune purple,grey black to navy blue,lime green,grass green,tangerine red,beige and ivory and more. With the African safari jungle themes and animal prints strongly predicted for summer 2009,snake skin bags,footwear and accessories are sure bets for the season.

CLASSIC CLUTCHES: They make for perfect company on an evening out. The clutch is still going strong. If you cant get your hands on the Judith Leiber range,you can bring home easy on the pocket options. The clutch is still a classic. Go for solid colours or those in metallic shades, designer Babi Grewal tips. Embellishments are subtle with Swarovski,stones,combination of thread and sequins,beads and satin finishes. Also accessories for handbags are new, tells Makkar who lists out bright,silky scarves and key chains for the bags outer appeal. Go on,take your pick.
