A local court sent Baba Pritpal Singh to 14 days of judicial custody here on Thursday . The police had sought a three-day remand of the accused to further investigate the matter. But the court had turned it down.
Head of the Gursagar Sahib Gurudwara Committee,Baba Pritpal was arrested on January 2 by the Special Crime Investigation Cell of the Chandigarh police. He,along with others, allegedly sold a piece of land for over Rs 1.2 crore to a private company ATS Builders on a forged general power of attorney (GPA). The land belonged to an NRI woman,Kamaljit Kaur, the complainant in the case.
Produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate Sumit Ghai,Baba was greeted by scores of his followers outside the court premises. Seeking his further remand,UT senior standing counsel Anupam Gupta said during his interrogation,Baba had disclosed various bank accounts and names of some chartered accountants.
He added further custodial interrogation was required to unravel the facts.
The police also said the case was being monitored by the High Court and various benches had expressed serious displeasure over the police investigation in the case over the last months when Baba was absconding.
Baba Pritpal Singh is not cooperating with the police in disclosing who had actually signed the GPA (in favour of the Baba himself) in the name of complainant Kamaljit Kaur, who was abroad at the time the GPA was executed in July 2005, the police said.
Baba was in police custody since his arrest four days ago.
