On the directives of the Inspector General of the Police (IGP),Chandigarh, the norms for physical tests have been amended for the posts of wireless operators in the Chandigarh Police. These posts are open to only those students who have studied science at the senior secondary level.
IGP S K Jain issued the said orders after the 13 women, shortlisted for these posts, failed to run 500 metres within the stipulated two minutes,on June 9.
The physical efficiency tests for this category will be conducted afresh, with the same candidates now required to run the distance in three minutes, said senior officers with the Chandigarh Police.
The 60 posts of wireless operators are to be filled equally with men and women candidates. For the 30 slotted seats for women, only 20 applications had been received,of which 13 qualified for the physical tests.
The norms have been relaxed for male aspirants too, considering the lukewarm response received from them. Of the 30 posts of wireless operators to be filled by men, nine are still lying vacant as the candidates failed the previous tests. The relaxed norms now require them to run a mile in six and a half minutes, instead of the earlier stipulation of five and a half minutes.
We were forced to make the amendments after all the women competing in the category failed the physical test. The new norms are expected to draw a better response, said IGP S K Jain, adding that the long jump and high jump tests had been quashed to make things easy.
