IN A first, to solve city’s civic problems concerned with neighbouring areas of Panchkula and Mohali, a Tricity Mayors’ Council comprising all the three mayors was formed on Monday.

The committee was constituted on the initiative of Mayor Arun Sood. The first meeting of the council on June 14 will take up issues such as stray dogs and stray cattle coming to the city from Panchkula and Mohali or vice versa, and the problems related to street vendors.

Sood feels that the committee should have been formed long back. “In fact, there was a need to have a platform where all the three mayors could sit and resolve the issues linked with the three cities. Even if stray dogs are sterilised in the peripheral areas of Chandigarh, those from Panchkula or Mohali come here. More such common problems in the Tricity will be solved jointly by the MCs now,” he said.

For mayors of Panchkula and Mohali, the formation of the council has fulfilled a long-pending need. “Since it is a Tricity, civic problems of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula are almost similar. When you sit together, good initiatives taken up in your area can be implemented at other places as well,” said Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh.

Panchkula Mayor Upinder Ahluwalia said, “Yes, I received the invite for June 14. We get a number of grievances from people who stay on the borders. They think that their area falls in Panchkula but actually it is in Chandigarh. So if we get a platform, we can share the common grievances.”

It was decided that later, all the three municipal commissioners would also be called to join the council.

Mohali Municipal Commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta points out that they want to discuss some vital issues with Chandigarh MC. “As the survey of street vendors is going on, those from Chandigarh are coming to Mohali too. When there is an anti-encroachment or a demolition drive, the encroachers shift their base to Mohali. So this meeting will help in solving such problems,” he said.
