AroundTown: Sub-committees: BJP,Cong reach consensus

On Monday,a consensus was reached between the BJP and the Congress over constitution of sub-committees.

CHANDIGARH: On Monday,a consensus was reached between the BJP and the Congress over constitution of sub-committees. A decision was taken that the BJP councillors would be made chairpersons of four sub-committees and vice-chairpersons of four. With this,the stalemate over the constitution of sub-committees would be solved. At a meeting held on Monday,it was decided that BJP councillors would be made chairpersons of electricity committee,slum development,apni mandi committee and the primary health committee when it is constituted. BJP councillors had earlier tendered their resignations from all the sub-committees,stating that the constitution of these panels did not follow proper procedure and the BJP councillors were not given adequate representation.

award for Kidar

CHANDIGARH: Eighty-seven-year old poet,author Kidar Nath Kidar has been awarded the prestigious Bhai Santokh Singh Award for 2011,instituted by the Haryana State Punjabi Sahit Akademi. The award carries a prize money of Rs 1 lakh. A renowned poet and a passionate Punjabi,Kidar led fellow writers to establish the Bazm-e-Adab,Punjabi Adabi Sangat and Bharti Kala Sangam in 1969 in Kuwait. With over 10 books and 50 radio dramas written by him,Kidar Nath’s writings transcend borders.

Punjab Roadways:
2-day strike begins

CHANDIGARH: Drivers,conductors and workshop workers belonging to 18 depots of Punjab Roadways went on a two-day strike starting from Monday. No bus of PUNBUS plied on the roads. Addressing rallies of the workers,CITU state general secretary Raghunath Singh and other leaders said the Punjab government and the management should abolish the illegal contract labour system and regularise workers who had been employed against regular posts on contract basis.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil listened to 18 complainants at the public hearing session at the UT Secretariat on Monday.
