Estate Office asked to justify proposal to reduce misuse charges

Chandigarh: The UT Estate Office has been asked to justify the need for reduction of misuse charges. A meeting to discuss the issue was chaired by UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas. The Estate Office had mooted a proposal to reduce the misuse charges from Rs 500 to Rs 100 per square feet of area under misuse. The Estate Office was asked to justify the need for reducing these charges. Around 550 notices on account of misuse are pending so far. However, the Estate Office has failed to recover crores of rupees that the residents need to pay on account of misuse charges. It is also likely that if a decision is taken to reduce misuse charges once the justification is given, the decision would not be in retrospective effect. This would imply that the residents would have to pay the charges that have already been levied. The Estate Office would also be required to see if after the levying of misuse charges the violations have gone up. The Estate Office had started levying misuse charges in 2002.
