A local Court,on Wednesday,gave seven years rigorous imprisonment to a 20-year-old local,holding him guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl.

Man gets 7-year RI for raping minor

CHANDIGARH: A local Court,on Wednesday,gave seven years rigorous imprisonment to a 20-year-old local,holding him guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl. The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) V P Sirohi also slapped a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the guilty,Vicky,a resident of Sector 48,Chandigarh.

Vicky was arrested on November 20,2010 on charges of kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old girl,a resident of Sector 49. Vicky was working with a local advertisement company.

The victim’s parents had lodged a missing person’s complaint when their daughter failed to return home. According to the prosecution,Vicky had taken the girl to Chintpurni,Himachal Pradesh,where he raped her.

BJP unit gears up for civic body elections

CHANDIGARH: National Secretary and incharge of city-unit BJP,Saroj Pandey was in the city on Wednesday and asked the party leadership to gear up for the forthcoming elections of the Municipal Corporation. Pandey held several meetings including those with the office bearers. With the elections to the civic body in the coming months,Pandey reviewed the preparations that are going on. Pandey said that the party has been holding nationwide Janjagran Abhiyan against the corrupt practices of the Congress led central government and inflation and mal-administration.

The campaign will continue till August 25. The city unit of the party has been affected by infighting among senior leaders.

At present the BJP has eight councillors in the 35-member House with Congress being in majority.

NABARD celebrates 30th foundation day

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana regional offices of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) celebrated the 30th foundation of the bank on July 12.

Regional Director Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Jasbir Singh was the chief guest on the occasion. He appreciated NABARD’s contribution in tackling the major issues facing the country,like food security,financial inclusion and poverty alleviation.

Chief General Manager (CGM) Punjab Regional Office Krishan Jindal and CGM Haryana K Sayeed Ali were present at the celebrations,along with other senior officials and staff members of the bank.

Smart cards for old-age pensioners

PANCHKULA: Regarding the delay in the distribution of Old Age Pension,DC Panchkula,Ashima Brar,said that pension will now be deposited directly in the bank accounts. “Work for issuing smart cards is in progress and will be completed soon. The business representatives appointed by the concerned bank will visit each village to open a bank account of the beneficiaries,” she added.

Regular meeting are being held with the bank representatives to expedite the work of the distribution of pension.

She said,“To solve all the pension related queries of the people,an office at Block Level will be set up in August,where representatives will be available from Monday to Saturday.”

Two booked for beating

CHANDIGARH: On the complaint of Gaurav Sharma,a resident of Sector 16/A,the police registered a case against Santosh Kumar Dube and Raj Kumar Dube,both residents of Sector 2 of Panchkula. The accused allegedly beat him up on Tuesday. He suffered injuries and was admitted in GH-16,Chandigarh. A case under Sections 323,506 and 34 of IPC has been registered in Sector 17 police station. The case is under investigation.

Health dept collects sample from Nukkar dhaba

Chandigarh: The UT Health department on Wednesday collected food samples from Nukkar Dhaba,in Sector 22. Gagandeep Singh,a resident of Zirakpur who had gone to have dinner at the dhaba at called up the health department and complained that the food served to him was not clean. He complained that there was a hair strand in the dish. Dr Satbir,from the health department when contacted said,“We immediately sent our team to the spot.

The sample will be sent to the lab for testing.”

A team including a food inspector reached the Dhaba and the food item was picked up by the team alongwith other eatables for laboratory testing.
