I-T surveys to curb hoarding
Panchkula: The Panchkula-based income tax department (investigations) conducted a survey at the Sector 26 grain market as part of a nationwide drive against hoarders. Income Tax (Investigations) Director Y R Saini said that Anil Trading Company and Shiv Aaloo Trading Company were surveyed. He,however,refused to divulge any details as investigations were going on. Sources said that I-T sleuths had taken some documents from the traders business premises. Two traders each at Jammu and Ludhiana and one at Faridabad were also targeted.
Mohinder Bajaj gets bail
Chandigarh: A local Court on Thursday allowed regular bail to Mohinder Bajaj,accused in the PEC recruitment scam. Bajaj was released on bail since the investigating agency had failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated period of 90 days. The Court had earlier dismissed his bail plea on October 21,2010. The scam came to light when the CBI arrested Dr Nishikant for allegedly masterminding the case of forging identity cards of 11 students,showing them as foreign students,to get them admitted to PEC under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme. Around 23 institutes,including PEC,are covered under this scheme.
Chandigarh: Prof Nirmal Singh of the Department of Physics,Panjab University (PU),has been honoured with a two-year Emeritus Fellowship by the University Grants Commission (UGC). He has been awarded to work on nuclear structure studies using Beam Spectroscopy. The fellowship carries an honorarium of Rs 20,000 per month in addition to a contingency grant of Rs 50,000 per annum that would be available for two years. Earlier,Prof Nirmal Singh was Emeritus Scientist of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR),New Delhi,from November 1,2008,to October 10,2010 and he was recently conferred the designation of Professor Emeritus by PU.
Rs 2 lakh goods stolen after Mohali break-in
Mohali: Unknown miscreants broke into a locked house during broad daylight in Phase V here and decamped with valuables estimated to be worth Rs 2 lakh. Ekta Sharma reported to the police that her parents had gone to their native place and she had gone to her workplace after leaving her house locked in the morning. In the evening,a neighbour called her over phone and informed her that the locks were lying broken. On returning home,she found that the place had been rummaged for valuables and estimated a loss of Rs 2 lakh. Though a police party reached the spot,the house owners alleged that neither were any fingerprints procured nor any other kind of investigations carried out in a proper manner. No case has been lodged yet.
ABVP members burn PMs effigy
Chandigarh: Members of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested against the ongoing corruption in the country and burnt an effigy of PM Manmohan Singh,Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi at the Panjab University Student Centre. There has been a long chain of scams in the reign of the Congress-led government Commonwealth Games scam,2g spectrum scam,Adarsh Society scam and many more, said ABVP North Zonal Organisation Secretary Sriniwas. ABVP campus unit president Sahil Garg and secretary Vikash Sharma,and Chandigarh unit vice-president Uttam Chand and Ruchi Kaul also addressed the gathering. The ABVP plans a mass consciousness programme from January 15 to 30 to highlight graft under the UPA government at the Centre.
