The Scouts and Guides of KV1 Chandimandir Cantonment celebrated the Flag Day today in order to give honour to the flag of the Scouts and Guides Movement.

Flag Day observed at Chandimandir

Chandigarh: The Scouts and Guides of KV1 Chandimandir Cantonment celebrated the Flag Day today in order to give honour to the flag of the Scouts and Guides Movement. As many as 160 Scouts and Guides participated actively in the celebration. The ceremony began with the welcome song presented by Cubs and Bulbuls followed by a prayer. The scouts of the vidyalaya presented an impressive pyramid display. The Principal,Bhupinder Kaur hoisted the scouts and guides flag and emphasized upon the motto of the movement ‘Be Prepared’ to face the greatest tribulations with positive energy and strength. She pointed out that the scouts and guides were expected to be mentally and physically strong with total dedication towards selfless service to the society. It is the duty of scouts and guides to be helpful in case of any untoward incident,disaster,accident or earthquake. They should lend a helping hand in maintaining a clean pollution-free environment by propagating the methods of leading eco-friendly lives.

Punjabi University exams from Nov 30

Patiala: The semester system examinations of Punjabi University shall commencing from November 30,2010 and the annual system under-graduate theory examination for private and distance education Department’s candidates shall be commencing from March 22,2011,for regular candidates from March 30,2011,and post-graduate candidates from April 19,2011. Giving this information Controller (Examinations) of the University Pawan Kumar Singla said that practical examinations will be held before the theory examinations.

Drug peddler arrested in Fatehgarh Sahib

Patiala: Fatehgarh Sahib Senior Superintendent of Police Ranbir Singh Khatra today claimed that during a campaign against drug abuse and anti-social elements,a drug peddler and criminal was arrested during a search operation. Khatra said a police party during a naka bandi at Bus Stand Ajnali,a bus coming from Ambala side was stopped and while searching the bus a clean shaved person immediately got up and started running from the bus. He was immediately followed and nabbed. He was identified as Manjot Singh of Batala district in Gurdaspur.

During his search one pistol .9 mm alongwith three live cartridges and 256 Gm smack were recovered. A case has been registered.

Library courses seats vacant at Punjabi University

Patiala: Some seats for Bachelor’s in Library Sciences and Master’s in Library Sciences courses being run by the Punjabi University’s Department of Distance Education are lying vacant for the session 2010-11. According to HoD Tejinder Kaur,the eligible candidates can apply for admission against these seats upto November 15 with a late fee of Rs 1,000.

Website on women’s issues launched

Patiala: Punjabi University’s Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh today launched the website of Women’s’ Studies Centre wscpedia.org to support its web content management system in the Syndicate room here today. Manju Verma,Director of the WSC,said the main objective of the website was to support the capacity building and promote gender equality in addition to highlighting issues concerning women empowerment. It would also help in building comprehensive database and enhance connectivity among various segments related to women issues. The Vice-Chancellor pleaded for exploring various frontiers concerning and highlighting the plight of the down-and-out and marginalised segments of women.

National Legal Services Day celebrated

Chaqndigarh: A string of activities marked the day for students of the Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 35 including a workshop organised by the State Legal Services Authority to celebrate National Legal Services Day.

The day commenced with the Cclebration of Chandigarh Police Raising Day. Present on the occasion were Jagdeep Jain,member Secretary SLSA,Madhu P Singh Sangeeta Jund and Colonel Bedi. Child Right Issues and Juvenile Justice were discussed with the senior students. A cultural programme was presented by the students. Raviraj Kaur,Principal of the School thanked the SLSA and YTTS for holding the workshop for the students. A painting competition on child activities was also organised for students of various schools.

28 students from Singapore arrive in city

Chandigarh: The Singapore delegation including four teachers and 28 students of Yishun Secondary School visited Government Model Senior Secondary School Sector-35 and DAV Model School Sector-15 as part of Educational Exchange Programme.

During the visit the delegates visited the school labs,classrooms,library,and computer labs. An interactive session was also held with the students of the respective schools. The teachers from Singapore demonstrated their innovative methods of teaching maths to the teachers and students of GMSSS-35. Sivaprakasam from Singapore demonstrated their method of online teaching through the website Hey Maths followed by Phua Kok who introduced the website Ace Learning.com.sg which is designed by a Singapore company. He demonstrated lessons on additional maths for the children between the age group of 15-16 years.

Mobile snatched from woman

Chandigarh: A mobile was snatched from a woman as she was waiting in a traffic jam on the road leading to Manimajra from Bapu Dham Colony here today. The woman,Renu Bala,a Sector 30 resident told the police that she had halted the car due to the jam when she received a call on her mobile. She was talking on the phone on the driver’s seat when a person on foot came and snatched her mobile phone and fled in no time in the jungle area. She raised an alarm and called the police but by that time the accused had fled. A case of snatching has been registered in Manimajra police station.
