MOHALI: Advocate JP Dhiman was unanimously elected as new president of the Mohali District Tax Bar Association at its annual general meeting held here today. The other office-bearers included: Dharam Singh-senior vice-president; PK Jindal and Ranjiv Loomba-vice-presidents; Mukesh Ghai-general secretary; and Madan Gopal-finance secretary. The executive members nominated included KS Mohindru; KK Aggarwal; RK Chaudhary; Sushil Ghai; Rajinder Malhotra; KK Noorpuri; and Adarshvir Singh.

Patiala woman kills own children,held

Ambala: A woman in connivance with her lover allegedly killed her two children on Saturday. The bodies of children were recovered from fields near Manmohan Nagar colony Ambala City. Babli and Ram Mehar,who eloped on August 24 with Satnam (5) and Preeti (3),were brought here by the Narwan police after they were handed over by the Patiala police. They had confessed their crime and had told them that the children had become a burden.

Narwana police had registered a case on the complaint of Dharamvir,husband of Babli.

LIC organises tree plantation drive

CHANDIGARH: Tree plantation drive was organised by LIC to mark the occasion of 54th anniversary of the organisation and Insurance Week celebrations today. The drive was organised at the the company’s guest house in Sector 8 which was presided over by Raghupal Singh,senior divisional manager. A large number of plants were also placed in the premises of the divisional office.

Gold chain snatched in Panchkula

PANCHKULA: IN a snatching incident,two youths on motorcycle snatched a chain from a woman near Sector 11 on Sunday afternoon. Kusum,in her complaint to the police,said she was buying fruits from a vendor outside her house when two youths purchased fruits worth Rs 10. They went back and returned within a few minutes and snatched her the chain weighing about 25 grams. She also raised the alarm but the culprits could not be nabbed. The police have registered a case.

Teachers’ Day celebrated

MOHALI: The teachers of Small Wonders School,Phase VII,Mohali,celebrated the Teachers’ Day with great cheer,spirit and joy on Sunday. On the occasion,all teachers of the school took a pledge to put in their best towards the education of their students and remain committed towards the noble profession of teaching so that young children grew up to become good and responsible citizens of the nation and pillars of the society. They also pledged to always remember the fact that they are not simply doing a job but rather rendering a service and no matter how difficult the children are or how demanding the routine is; they would always exhibit patience and politeness. Principal Hardip Nama said a special ‘teachers day out’ was planned by the school,during which the teachers were taken out for a movie show of ‘We are family’. After watching the movie,the teachers were taken for a lunch party.

Research in science will take mankind forward,says DPI Colleges

PATIALA: As many as 25 teams from different colleges of Punjab participated in the science fair organised by the Government Mohindra College under the aegis of the department of Biotechnology,Government of India. The theme of the fair was “Science in the Service of Mankind” where participants exhibited working and static models to prove how science can prove to be mankind’s friend.

Speaking at the occasion,DPI (C) Jagmeet Kaur claimed that science students should go for more and more discoveries so that more new inventions come for betterment of science. “Research in science would surely take mankind forward”,she stated.

Principal Government Mohindra College Sudeep Bhangu claimed that the college students would gain many new ideas from such shows and it would further open prospects for students in science.

Rs 6.5 crore for construction of roads in Ambala,says Kumari Selja

Ambala: Union Minister for Tourism and Alleviation of Poverty Kumari Selja said those who were found guilty of corruption in the execution of works of the Commonwealth Games projects would not be spared. She said all eyes of the world were on the Commonwealth Games and the prestige of India was at stake.

The minister was talking to the media after planting a Rudraksh tree at Netaji Subhash Bose Park Ambala Cantonment today. In reply to a question,she said she had written a letter to the state government for compensation to those who had suffered in the recent floods. She said that areas of Ambala,Yamunanagar and Panchkula in her Lok Sabha constituency had been badly flooded causing damages to the crops as well as residential and commercial establishments. She said Rs 6.5 crore had been sanctioned for the construction and repair of damaged roads in Ambala Cantonment.

‘Declare Eid-ul-Fitr a gazetted holiday in Chandigarh’

CHANDIGARH: THE Alfarid Education Society,Chandigarh,has appealed to the Central government and Prime Minister to declare Eid-ul-Fitr falling on September 10 or 11 as a gazetted holiday and fulfil other long pending demands of the Muslim community in Chandigarh. The society is devoted to the upliftment of Muslim community. In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Minority Affairs; Home Secretary and Deputy Commissioner,Chandigarh,the society has written that the “Muslim minority community at Chandigarh is being continuously discriminated as their some of the long pending genuine demands are being ignored by UT Administration,Chandigarh for a long time”. Some of long pending demands of the Muslim Community are non-allotment of land for establishment of community centre for Muslim community; non-allotment of land for opening of secondary school for Muslim minority community; non-allotment of land for Ram Darbar Masjid for the last about 20 years for the Muslim residents of Ram Darbar; discrimination against Urdu as the same is not being taught in government schools and no efforts are being taken by UT Administration for upliftment of Urdu language at Chandigarh and non-constitution of the Chandigarh Wakf Board.
