Man commits suicide in Ram Darbar
Chandigarh: A 22-year-old man,Satish Kumar ended his life during the intervening night by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in Ram Darbar. Police have ruled out the possibility of any foul play. Police said Satish who had recently completed his graduation from Kurukshetra university was found hanging by his mother at mid-night. Satish was rushed to the hospital where he was declared as brought dead, police said,adding that no suicide note was recovered from the spot.
MIT neuro-scientist to visit city
Chandigarh: US based Indian Neuro-scientist and Head,Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),Prof Mriganka Sur,will be in the city on August 24th to address school and college students at Tagore Theatre. Prof Mriganka Sur,FRS,is also Director of Simons Initiative on Autism and the Brain,and has been invited by the Society for Promotion of Science and Technology in India in view of his monumental contribution to the understanding of brain.
Stray cattle impounded
Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation has impounded 20 stray cattle over the past two days during drives held at Madhya Marg,Dadumajra and Kajheri. Twelve cattle catchers and two trucks of the MC were deployed during the drive. The drive was conducted by a team of Municipal Corporation officials supervised by B K Salwan,Medical Officer Health,chief sanitary inspectors with the help of cattle catchers.
77 students donate blood
Chandigarh: As many as 77 students came forward and donated blood in a blood donation camp organised by Lions Club Chandigarh Nightingale at Post Graduate Government College,Sector 46. Preet Kanwal Singh,Governor,Lions Clubs International,district 321F inaugurated the camp and also donated blood for the 45th time. According to Preet Kanwal Singh,Blood donation is a noble cause and should be encouraged more in a city like Chandigarh,where patients from faraway places come for treatment. It is one of the core responsibilities toward our society.
Rural sports meet from Aug 21
Chandigarh: The Guru Gobind Singh Sports Club and Democratic Youth Federation of India,Dadu Majra village unit will organise the Annual Rural Sports Meet at the Guru Drona Acharya Stadium in the village from August 21. Ravinderpal Singh Palli,Chandigarh Mayor will inaugurate the meet. The sports meet is organised every year to commemorate Janam Asthmi and Guga Maddi mela.In addition to this,the Guga Maddi Committee,Dadu Majra village will organise a wrestling competition on August 24 from 3 pm to 6 pm at the same venue.
Sports Day at PGI
Chandigarh: A Sports Day was organised in the National Institute of Nursing Education,PGIMER,on Thursday. The event was inaugurated by Prof Meenu Singh,Department of Pediatrics. Students organised various sports events like sack race,three-legged race,spoon-potato race,tug-of -war,kho- kho,balloon race,musical chairs and tambola.
Workshop on urban plantation
Chandigarh: A workshop on ‘Urban Plantation: Choice of Tree Species,Techniques Specifications was inaugurated on Thursday at Botanical Garden,Sarangpur. The basic aim of this workshop is to train and to empower various stakeholders who are involved in tree plantation activities in the urban area of Chandigarh. There were around 35 participants which include 15 NGOs,15 Eco- Club Incharges and field staff of Forest department. In his inaugural address,Santosh Kumar,Conservator of Forests requested all the participants to learn more about choice of species and its plantation techniques so as to make Chandigarh a clean and green city.
Fire at GMCH 32
Chandigarh: A minor fire broke out on Thursday at the OPD department of the ENT department at Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32. According to sources,a short circuit sparked off the fire at about 9 am. Sources say that cotton lying in the room of the ENT OPD resulted in smoke filling up the room. Dr Vipin Kaushal,Medical Superintendent of the hospital said that it was a small incident and everything was brought under control within minutes. However,the fire staff at the hospital was immediately called in and patients were immediately evacuated.
