Rape accused still absconding
CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh police has yet to arrest the second accused in a rape case of a class X student in Ram Darbar on July 29. The other accused Gaurav is still absconding, an officer in Sector 31 police station said. We are conducting raids to arrest him,but so far he is still at large. The officer said that Baskar was on a 14-day judicial custody.
Estate Office seals tent house,shop
Chandigarh: Continuing its drive against illegal tent houses functioning from different markets in the city,a team of UT Estate Office sealed Mahajan Tent House,in Sector 30 today after it was found to be functioning without permission required for it as the tentage business falls under the category of special trades.
This was the fifth tent house sealed during last week. A team led by Ravinder Sharma,Inspector (misuse and enforcement) sealed the shop.
Carpenter commits suicide
AMBALA: A young carpenter committed suicide by consuming an unknown poisonous substance in Viswakarma colony,Maheshnagar area of Ambala Cantonment last night. The deceased,Sunil (30),was taken to Civil Hospital,Ambala Cantonment from where he was referred to Ambala City General Hospital,where he died. Sunil had left a suicide note in which he alleged that he was ending his life as he had problems involving his wife and her parents. The police registered case of abetment to suicide against his wife and her parents. The police arrested Sonias parents Deepak and Kusum while Sonia is absconding. The dead body was handed over to the kin after post mortem.
Two convicted for murder
CHANDIGARH: A lower Court of Chandigarh today convicted two accused for murdering a watchman posted at the Leisure Valley,Sector 10. Those convicted are Karnail Singh of Kapurthala and Sukhjinder Singh on charges of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for murder. The quantum of sentence will be decided on Thursday. Gum Bahadur,a watchman posted at the Leisure Valley,was found murdered in his room on March 16 last. The accused,Karnail Singh,was arrested from Dera Bassi in April 2009.
Nine arrested in anti-eve teasing campaign
CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Police devised a novel way to find eve teasers in the city,on Tuesday. By the end of the day nine alleged eve teasers landed in police custody. Police sources said that traps were laid at various public places in the city where lady police constables in plain clothes were asked to sit by their officers and when ever any passerby indulged in eve teasing,the offenders were rounded up by the police. The police has registered cases under section 294 IPC has against them. Police said that campaign against eve teasing will continue in the days ahead.
Three arrested after fight
Panchkula: Police arrested three youth for a scuffle at Sector 10 market. As per the complainant,Davinder Sharma,he had come to Sector 10 market for cold drink supply. Four boys on motorcycles and scooters were already standing close to the shop. He alleged that scuffle started after an argument and they snatched Rs 40,000 from him. He further alleged that he was severely beaten too. The police arrested Sonu,Kuldeep and Anthony and search for the fourth one was on till the filing of the copy. A case under Section 323 and 506 of IPC has been registered at Sector 10 Police Post.
Man critical after being stabbed
CHANDIGARH: A city resident,Goldi allegedly stabbed his cousin,Jugnu at Manimajra this evening,the police said. Jugnus condition is stated to be critical. Police said the incident took place at around 7 pm when Jugnu and Goldi,both residents of Manimajra,had an argument over some issue and the two started fighting. Goldi later stabbed Jugnu in the chest and fled from the spot. Jugnu was rushed to the civil hospital where from he was shifted the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16 (GMSH-16). His condition is serious, police said. A case has been registered in Manimajra police station and the police has launched a hunt to nab Goldi.
125 challans for over-speeding
CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh police issued 125 challans in last two days for over-speeding in the city. Police said that the challans were issued during the special checking on the IT park road and the southern Sectors. Police also used speed radars during these checks.
Teej celebrated in Ramdarbar
Chandigarh: Teej was celebrated at the community centre at Ramdarbar today. Stalls were displayed and a cultural programme was presented. A tree plantation drive was also held wherein a variety of saplings were planted. Municipal Commissioner Prerna Puri was the chief guest and Area Councillor Ram Lal was present.
Sanitation drive held at Manimajra
Chandigarh: A sanitation drive was held today at Manimajra. Additional sweepers were deployed and awareness was spread among the residents to keep the area clean. Dumper placers,tractor trolleys and cycle rickshaw carts were deployed for clearing road side waste and garbage. The residents were educated through public address system to segregate the dry and wet waste. They were asked to deposit the waste with the door to door collector or in the garbage container provided by the civic body.
