PU declares CET results
CHANDIGARH: Panjab University declared the results of CET late on Thursday evening. This year,Tejeshwar Jain from Ambala secured first position in the PCB (Physics,Chemistry,Biology) category of Panjab University Common Entrance test. He also secured 43rd rank in CBSE-PMT. Other toppers include Rishav Sharma in Hotel management,Shreya Takkar in Legal Awareness,Bharti Gupta in Mathematics,Abhishek Verma in Physics,Chemistry and Mathematics. Nearly 8000 students had appeared in the CET-2011 exam conducted by the university on May 22.
Booth allotment scam: Body demands action against guilty
CHANDIGARH: The Global Human Rights Council has sent a legal-cum-demand notice to the UT Home Secretary,asking him to initiate action against Estate Office officials and register an FIR against the allegedly illegal booth allottees at Rehri market in Sector 41. While addressing mediapersons on Friday,the council members alleged that booths have been allotted in Rehri Market in an irregular and illegal manner. They also released a list of 15 such booths. The council had conducted a survey and the videographed the area in question,said Chairman Arvind Thakur. Information about illegal transactions has been collected through Right to Information Act. Estate Office officials,politicians and police are involved in the matter, he added.
Man arrested for rape of dancer
CHANDIGARH: Police arrested a 37-year-old-watchman,Hari Singh from Industrial Area on Friday for raping a dancer,a resident of Chandigarh. Police said Hari Singh,who hails from Nepal,had invited the 27-year-old dancer to perform at a marriage party on Thursday night. The dancer went to Singhs work place in the Industrial area last evening so that the watchman could take her to the marriage party. The accused forcibly locked her the dancer in the room with him and raped her,according to the police. The dancer later lodged a compliant with the police and her medical examination confirmed the rape later. The police registered a case under Section 342 and 376 IPC and the watchman was arrested and sent to judicial custody.
19-year-old truck driver dies in mishap
MOHALI: A 19-year-old truck driver died after a colliding head-on with a recklessly driven bus on the Mohali-Ropar stretch of National Highway-21 near Padiala village,close to Kharar,late last night. The deceased has been identified as Sandeep Singh of Lakhmipur village in Ropar. The seriously injured truck driver was rushed to Kurali Civil Hospital,where he succumbed to his injuries. However,all bus passengers and crew escaped unhurt. The bus driver Harpal Singh of Jora village in Tarn Taran fled the spot after leaving the bus behind. He was booked for causing death by rash and negligent driving under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC.
Lok Adalat to dispose of 15,000 cases today
CHANDIGARH: A quarterly Lok Adalat will be held on Saturday in the Chandigarh District Court. Over 15000 cases pertaining to traffic challans,motor accident claims,crime against women,cheque bounce cases and other petty offences will be disposed off tomorrow.
Week-long campaign for environment
CHANDIGARH: In collaboration with the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation,Sai Tara Ummat Foundation and CPTL Envirotech,have launched a week-long campaign from June 1 to celebrate World Environment Day. The aim of the campaign is to create awareness about protecting the environment and checking global warming.
