Senior citizens marathon held
Mohali: The Gian Jyoti Institute of Management Technology (GJIMT) Rotaract Club and Rotary Club organised a senior citizens marathon here on Tuesday to spread the message Clean City,Green City. The marathon started from City Park,Sector 68,and concluded at Rotary Bhawan,Sector 70,after covering a distance of 2.5 km. Sponsored by former local Rotary Club president Ashok Gupta,it was flagged off by Vijay Goel. The marathon helped in spreading awareness among local residents about the importance of greenery and cleanliness through banners and sharing of views.
Man dies of cold
Lalru: An unidentified man,probably in his 70s,was found dead near a taxi stand in Lalru on Tuesday. The police said that the deceased was mentally disturbed and had been seen roaming aimlessly near the taxi stand for many days. He died of excessive cold conditions, said the cops. As the deceased has not been identified yet,his body has been kept at the Civil Hospital,Dera Bassi,for 72 hours,the police added.
HSEB strike on February 2
Panchkula: Haryana State Electricity Board (HSEB) employees are scheduled to go on a day-long strike on February 2. The HSEB Workers Union has issued a press statement condemning the state government for not implementing its 11-point charter of demands. Union president Raj Singh Dahiya said,We are holding a statewide demonstration at Rohtak on January 22 in support of an increase in wages under the Sixth Pay Commission,restructuring of ranks and promotion of contractual staff to permanent status.
BJP meet on Jan 16
Chandigarh: The BJP will hold the second meeting of its State Executive Committee on January 16. BJP national Secretary Saroj Pandey,who is in charge of the partys Chandigarh affairs,will be present on the occasion. Core committee members,office-bearers and convenors of all cells of the party will attend the meeting.
Anti-Illegal mining drive
Panchkula: The Panchkula police have impounded three tractor & trolleys involved in illegal mining at Asrewali village in the district. As part of the campaign against illegal mining in the area under Chandimandir police station,Sub-Inspector Khajan Singh issued challans to four people under the Motor Vehicle Act. The district mining officer was also called and a case registered under Section 21-4 of the Mines and Mineral Act.
Insurance agents to be trained
Chandigarh: Reliance Life Insurance Company (RLIC) said on Monday that it would help 1 lakh aspirants become certified insurance agents in the year 2011. RLIC Executive Director and President Malay Ghosh said that as per norms,a prospective agent needs to undergo a mandatory 50 hours of training. He added that Reliance Life Insurance will also put the trainees through three-day refresher training and mock tests at its branches in different regions of the country. The statement said that the company has 2.13 lakh insurance advisors and sold over 7 million policies as on November 30,2010.
Swiss tourism holds roadshow
Chandigarh: Indians scored a new high in Switzerland in 2010,with a 25 per cent growth in total overnights spent in the spectacular Alpine country 20 per cent of these from Punjab. Enthused by the 4 lakh overnights by Indians there last year,Switzerland Tourism wants to take the number to 5 lakh this year and is hardselling one of the worlds favourite holiday destinations with a roadshow in six cities here. The roadshow took off in Chandigarh on Monday. It will now go to Delhi,Kolkata,Bangalore,Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
