DEO among 12 officers found absent
Mohali:
During surprise checks at certain government offices in Mohali on Thursday,several public servants were found absent from duty. While the district education officer (secondary) was among the 12 government staffers found absent,the office of Punsup district manager was not even opened,it is learnt. On the directions of Deputy Commissioner Parveen Kumar,Mohali SDM Amit Talwar swooped on the offices of DEO (Secondary),food and civil supplies department and Punsup. At 9.15 am,when the SDM checked in,the DEO (Secondary) and his five subordinates were absent. The DEO,however,walked in around 9.45 am,when the SDM was about to leave. At the food and civil supplies office,an inspector,four clerks and a peon were found absent. The SDM has sent a report to the DC for further action.

PU prof invited to deliver lecture at ISC
Chandigarh:
Dr R K Pathak,professor of anthropology and coordinator,Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology,Panjab University,has been invited to deliver a platinum jubilee lecture on anthropology and behavioural sciences — including archaeology and psychology and educational and military sciences — at the 98th Indian Science Congress (ISC) to be held at SRM University,Chennai,from January 3 to 7. The theme of the Congress is “Quality Education and Excellence in Scientific Research in Indian Universities”. The science congress is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Science Express train chugs into Ambala
Ambala:
A Science Express train to create interest in science among students reached Ambala Cantonment railway station on Thursday. Ambala Railway Divisional Manager P K Sanghi inaugurated the exhibition and said it would remain open till January 2. He said more than 300 science models were on display in the train comprising 16 compartments. He said the train manufactured with joint efforts of the governments of India and Germany in 2007 would halt at 55 railway stations in the country covering more than 18,000 kilometres.
