Anti-ragging campaign from Aug 10

On the initiative of the Himachal Pradesh High Court,Himachal Pradesh University,the state’s Education department and the police have joined hands with the State Legal Services Authority to launch a mass awareness campaign on August 10 against ragging and its legal implications.

The campaign will be launched by Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Kurian Joseph on the HPU campus on August 10,in the presence of Justice R B Mishra,Education Minister I D Dhiman,Director General of Police D S Manhas and the vice-chancellors of Dr Y S Parmar Horticulture University,Nauni (Solan),and Chaudhary Sravan Kumar Agriculture University,Palampur. Principals and student members of the anti-ragging committees of professional colleges have also been invited to participate.

Speaking to The Indian Express,HPU Vice-Chancellor Professor Sunil Kumar Gupta said: “After implementation of the law against ragging in Himachal last year,anti-ragging committees were formed in all higher and professional educational institutions. But a need for mass awareness about legal and social aspects of the issue was being felt.”

The HP State Legal Services Authority volunteered to spread the message. Justice Kurian is the chief patron of the authority and Justice Mishra is its executive chairman.

“The public discussion with legal luminaries and senior members of the judiciary also aims to dispel the misconceptions among the administrations of educational institutions about the Anti-Ragging Act and its proper implementation,” the V-C said.
