Amritsar lawyers protest

Amritsar Bar Association members observed a ‘no work day’ and blocked traffic at Kitchlu Chowk in protest.

Amritsar Bar Association members on Friday observed a ‘no work day’ and blocked traffic at Kitchlu Chowk in protest against the district administration’s failure to hand over land for construction of 138 lawyers’ chambers. Led by their President Pardeep Kumar Saini, the lawyers raised slogans against Deputy Commissioner KS Pannu for not transferring the land to them.

The lawyers had earlier given an ultimatum to the DC to fulfill their demand. On the other hand, the DC said the land in question was for the construction of District Administration Complex (DAC),a long pending project and the same could not be given to the lawyers. “We had agreed as per the directions of Punjab and Haryana High Court to provide an alternative site to the lawyers and we are even ready to construct the chambers. The lawyers want alternative land but do not want to vacate the already occupied land,” said the DC.
