Radical preacher and Waris Punjab De (WPD) chief Amritpal Singh, currently lodged at Dibrugarh jail in Assam, Thursday moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking temporary release for seven days to file his nomination to contest Lok Sabha polls from Sri Khadoor Sahib constituency.

The matter will come up for hearing Friday before the bench of Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj. In the petition, Amritpal has submitted that the last date for filing nominations is May 14.

Through his petition, Amritpal has sought directions to Punjab government, Election Commission of India, Superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail, and Punjab State Election Commission to make arrangements for him to fill his nomination form for appointment of election agents and and all other paper work which is required for filing nomination papers.

Amritpal, through his counsel Imaan Singh Khara, has mentioned in the petition that on May 2, 2024, a letter was written by his father to Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, to provide necessary instruction and guidelines, required to be followed by him to file his nomination to contest election. Subsequently on May 3, another letter was written by his father to Amritsar District Magistrate to provide necessary direction to Superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail, to administer oath to the petitioner and send a certified copy to the Returning Officer.

Further, the petition states that on May 6, another letter was written by Amritpal to Chief Election Commissioner, ECI and to Punjab CEO to provide necessary means in order to facilitate the petitioner to file his nomination and complete other formalities. “On May 7, ECI sent all necessary guidelines required in the case of petitioner to CEO and asked him to take necessary action as per the said guidelines,” it states.

Mteh petition adds that Punajb CEO had then written to Deputy Commissioner-cum District Election Officer, Tarn Taran to take necessary action.
