A three-decade-old slum was pulled down in Phase I here this evening as part of an anti-encroachment drive undertaken by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA),thereby vacating around 8 kanals of land.
As many as 50 illegal structures, mainly hutments, were razed amidst resistance from the encroachers during the operation, which lasted for almost three hours,GMADA Estate Officer (EO) Balbir Singh Dhol told Newsline.
Dhol said the illegal slum existed here for the past almost 30 years and when a local court following an order of the High Court declined any relief or resettlement to the encroachers,GMADA asked them to vacate the area voluntarily.
Today around 2 pm when around 18 staffers of GMADAs enforcement wing under protection of 40 cops, including 10 women cops, and duty magistrate, the encroachers, mainly migrants, refused to come out of their illegal structures but as the bulldozer began moving, the encroachers began pelting stones on the enforcement staffers.
However, when the heavy police force began moving towards the encroachers, they soon gave up and began moving out. GMADA EO disclosed that before being encroached, the area was serving as a green belt but now its future planning would be decided shortly.
