‘After pneumonia,acute diarrhoea kills Indian kids’

On the concluding day of 20th National Conference on Paediatric Gastroenterology,Hepatology and Nutrition Conference,2010 (PGHANCON-2010) at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research.

On the concluding day of 20th National Conference on Paediatric Gastroenterology,Hepatology and Nutrition Conference,2010 (PGHANCON-2010) at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER),Chandigarh,experts said acute diarrhoea continues to remains the major health problem among children in India. During the three-day conference,the experts discussed the most common problems among children related to gastrointestinal tract,liver and nutrition.

“Acute diarrhoea is the second killer disease in our country,second only to pneumonia,” Sumathi from Chennai said while addressing the conference. “Meticulous and timely treatment can prevent the mortality. There is a need of using ORS to prevent and treat dehydration,” she added.

The doctors said untreated diarrhoea precipitates malnutrition. They said that role of zinc and diet are the most important to maintain good health in a child.

Sheila Bhave from Pune talked on preventive aspects of rotavirus diarrhoea. She said effective vaccine against this viral infection is now available.

Rajiv Mathur from Hyderabad talked about the occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome in children. Deliberations on treatment of severe malnutrition were discussed by expert faculty from PGI.

Dinesh Panshankar from USA talked about management of recurrent vomiting in children. A session on hepatitic illnesses stressed on the need of early recognition and effective timely treatment. Prevention of various diseases like typhoid,cholera,Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B were discussed in detail by experts.
